Craig Hanrahan

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 54

Craig L. Hanrahan was born December 28, 1954, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Earl Leroy “Buddy” and Phyllis (Elshere) Hanrahan. He grew up on his parents’ farm-ranch west of Milesville. He attended West Fork and Cheyenne Rural Schools prior to graduating from Philip High School in 1973. As a young man, he worked with his parents on the farm-ranch. He and his brother Mark did custom farming in the Milesville area for a period of time.
Craig was united in marriage to Debbie Mowell on August 5, 1978, in Philip, South Dakota. They made their home on his parents’ farm-ranch a mile west of his parents. In 1982, they moved to the Big Stone Ranch near the Cheyenne River, where they continued to reside, farm and ranch until his death.
Craig attended the Hardingrove Church in Milesville and the United Church in Philip. He served on the Haakon County School Board for a total of 18 years. He was a member of the Howes Grazing Association and various other livestock associations. Craig was an avid outdoorsman enjoying 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, motorcycling and classic cars.
He also enjoyed attending farm and ranch shows, but most of all he enjoyed his grandson Torin.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Debbie of Philip; two sons Jaeson Hanrahan and Cody Hanrahan both of Philip; two daughters Christal Jackson and her husband Eric of Rapid City; and Carisa Hanrahan of Philip; two grandchildren McKay and Torin Jackson; his mother Phyllis Hanrahan of Philip; one brother Mark Hanrahan and his wife Pat of Milesville; two sisters Cathy Erdmann of Philip, and Becky Drury and her husband Neal of Rapid City; his mother-in-law Kay Couch of Philip; and a host of other relatives and friends.

I will miss seeing him coming to get parts once in a while.(I still have the article he wrote in the paper about the "parts man" in a frame in my office.) Craig had many good traits, one of the many being the sunset pictures he would take. He will be greatly missed by many. ~ Tish Pierre (8/19/2009)
  • Deb and Family~
We are never really ready to let special people go-and Craig was all of that for sure. He was such a quiet and patient person, and a great mentor to "newbies" on the board. I was grateful for the guidance. He had a very unique talent for reasoning things out and seeing down the road; for contemplating future needs and goals. He could also say the tough and unpleasant things that needed said-but in such a gentle manly way, it helped take the sting away! Now I wish I had taken better notes! It has been a pleasure to get to know him better and to work with him in that capacity. He truly had the Philip schools and its staff and students at heart. His passing will be a loss for all of us.
We will continue to think of you in the days and weeks to come-he certainly treasured his family. Thank you for sharing Craig with all of us!

  • I have thought about what I should write or add to this register that has not been said or added,I had been in touch with Craig mostly after my father passed late last year and I truly looked forward to Craig's e-mails and I was amazed that he never complained about his condition other than how it upset him to watch his family out doing the work he could no longer do. Some one said only the good die young, guess its true.
