In memory of

Arlene Joyce Albin

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Friday, March 23, 2007 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital at the age of 66

Arlene Joyce Harmdierks was born December 3, 1940, in Lane, South Dakota, the daughter of George and Lena (Schroeder) Harmdierks. She grew up on her grandparents’ homestead near Lane, South Dakota, where she attended school, graduating from Lane High School in 1958. As a young girl she moved to Wall, South Dakota, where she worked at the Wall Café, Sportsman Liquor, and the Cactus Café.
Arlene was united in marriage to Robert Albin on September 25, 1965, in Rapid City, South Dakota. They made their home in Wall all their married life. She continued to work at the Cactus Café until health reasons forced her retirement in the early 1990’s.
Arlene was baptized at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lane on February 2, 1941 and later confirmed in that church. She transferred to First Lutheran Church in Wall on March 2, 1966. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and working crossword puzzles.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband Robert Albin of Wall; two sisters Darlene Berg of Gresham, Oregon, and Ruby Harper and her husband Larry of Woonsocket, South Dakota; five brothers Alvin Harmdierks and his wife Deb of Wolsey, South Dakota, Herman Harmdierks of Wessington Springs, Edwin Harmdierks and his wife Jean of Watertown, Orville Harmdierks and his wife Vickie of Wessington Springs, and Jerry Harmdierks of Wall; a half-sister Mildred Abrahamson of Denver, Colorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.

  • To the family of Arlene Albin-
I just read the news of Arlene in the Courant. I am so sorry. Whenever I saw Arlene she was always nice and friendly to me. I always appreciated her kindness. We didn't have too much in common but always found a way to make for a good conversation.
Bob and family, I am sorry for your loss and I will miss when I am home seeing her around town.
    You have my deepest sympathy.

    ~ Kari R. Welsh Anchorage, AK (3/23/2007)

  • You got to do everything cause you were older. As we grew up, I don't know how may times I heard "Because she's older".
Later on it was a little different. We were almost the same, working together and living together. (Lots of memories) But you were still the big sister. Now it's my turn.
I haven't been doing too good this week. And I was just thinking, maybe it's God's way of saying - "Get it together. You're the big sister now."
So I know you're with the rest of the Harmdierks angels. Keep looking out for us. If I screw up on this Big Sister job, let me know about it. And tell Ma & Pa we'll all be coming home again soon.

    ~ Darlene Gresham, OR (3/23/2007)
  • I have great memories of working with Arlene at the Cactus. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. ~ Don and Susie Cuppy Mitchell, SD (3/23/2007)
