of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the Kadoka Nursing Home in Kadoka at the age of 97

Orville Sandall was born February 5, 1914, in Kadoka, South Dakota, the son of Carl and Ida (Singer) Sandall. He grew up on a farm in the South Creek Community north of Kadoka. He received his education at a rural school near their farm. As a young man he worked on the family farm and for neighbors in the area.
Orville was united in marriage to Agnes Johnson on August 28, 1938, in Custer, South Dakota.
Orville and his brother served in the United States Army during WWII. They both served as cooks in North Africa and elsewhere. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Kadoka.
He held various jobs in Kadoka until 1956, when he began working for the US Fish and Wildlife Service until retiring in 1976. He continued to help local farmers and ranchers with predator control.
Orville invented a device for spreading prairie dog bait that was mounted on a 4-wheeler. He received an incentive award from the US Government for this.
Survivors include his niece Tennie Riggs and her husband Gary of Capitan, New Mexico; special friends Glenn and Normaleen VandeGarde of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.

  • Dear Tennie and Gary,
W are so sorry to hear of Orville's passing. He lived a long and very good life. I have known Orville and his brother, Faner, since before I was in grade school, which is near 50 years ago. Both were such nice people and so much fun to visit with. Agness taught all three of our children. Even when I was a small child, I remember Orville was always whistling and so happy.
The entire town will miss seeing Orville's smiling face.
~ Betty Lou Stratton Kadoka, SD (1/3/2012)
  • Orville worked with my father and I remember him as a good man and a good coyote hunter ! ~ R. W. Lemm Story WY (1/3/2012)
  • Orville was a soft spoken man with a bright smile for anyone he met, always ready to help Bruce with a gun problem he had. We enjoyed his company when we were around him. Agnes was a pillar of the Kadoka School. Heaven now has some wonderful people up there. Bruce and Bonnie ~ Bruce and Bonnie Madsen Kadoka S.D. (1/3/2012)
  • We are sorry to hear of Orville's passing.. He was a great guy. When we lived in Kadoka he passed on his trapping skills to Rod.. And Agnes taught me alot about gardening. We are so blessed to have known both of them.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
~ Rod & Darlene Cudmore Fort Pierre SD (1/3/2012)
  • My folks, Wayne and Ruth Fairchild, enjoyed Orville when he trapped on their place and they were great friends over the many years. I had the privilege of taking Orville for a fly to see how beautiful the country was this fall. He so enjoyed that. Also, among things we had was a hand made coyote call Orville had made for Dad, I returned it to him, I didn't get a sound out of it, but Orville smiled and got a good call out of it. He wondered if my dad could see how great the country looked after we flew. His smile and pleasant personality will be missed. ~ Marsha and Bill Sumpter Kadoka (1/3/2012)
  • Orville was one of the neatest men I ever had the pleasure to meet. I worked at Kadoka Care Center before I went to nursing school. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to talk to him many times about his past. He was a special guy. My prayers are with his family. ~ Jay and Tabatha Calhoon Wall (1/3/2012)
  • I never met Orville till 2002, but I had heard a lot about him over the years. I have a picture of him and my father, Ole Olson, when they were younger. It shows both of them beside a vehicle with several coyote's . When my father and I took the trip back to SD. I got to meet him and his wife. I enjoyed all the stories they remembered. I saw him twice after that and always enjoyed the fellowship he and my father had. Blessings to his family and friends. He will be missed. ~ Laura Humphrey Grants Pass, Oregon (1/3/2012)
