In memory of

Pauline Schofield

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 82

Eva Pauline Fosheim was born on September 21, 1930 in Midland, South Dakota, the daughter of Peter and Viola (Hand) Fosheim. She grew up in the Deep Creek area and was baptized and confirmed in the Deep Creek Church. This church would always hold fond memories for her and a special place in her heart. She completed Grades 1-8 at Little Eagle School and attended Midland High School.
On September 12, 1947, Pauline was united in marriage to Harry H. “Hank” Schofield at the Lutheran parsonage in Midland, SD and to this union nine children were born. They lived and worked in the Midland area until 1959 when they moved onto the Schofield family homestead southwest of Midland on Brave Bull Creek. This is where they spent the remainder of their 56 years of married life with Pauline faithfully working beside her husband keeping books for the ranch and tending to their home and family. After losing her beloved husband to his brave fight with cancer in November of 2003, Pauline moved from her home and lived with her daughter and family for four years until she entered the Kadoka Nursing Home. She later moved to the Philip Nursing Home in order to be closer to her family and this is where she resided until the time of her death.
Pauline’s life revolved around her home, family, and God. She had an unfaltering faith which she passed down to her children and this is what carried her through the many trials and hardships she endured during her lifetime. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had that special talent of “turning a house into a home” with all the little things she did, whether it be having fresh baked cookies waiting for the kids when they got home from school, staying up all night to sew doll clothes for her daughters at Christmas, or making play dough for her grandchildren. Her love of children was evident and the door to Hank and Pauline’s home was always open to anyone who needed a place to stay. Throughout the years they welcomed many children into their home loving and treating them as their own.
God blessed Pauline with many talents. She loved music, had a beautiful singing voice and taught herself to play several instruments including the piano, which was her favorite. She was also a gifted seamstress, artist, writer, quilter, cook and baker, to name a few. She was an avid reader and encouraged the children in her life to do the same.
Throughout her life she was an active member of the Deep Creek and Trinity Lutheran churches teaching Sunday School, Release Time and Bible School. She was a member of the Rebecca Circle, served as PTA President, 4-H leader and was involved in a number of other various clubs and organizations.
Pauline is survived by four sons, Monte Schofield and Lucas (Brigit) Schofield of Midland, SD, Kirby (Nancy) Schofield of Belvidere, SD, and Wesley (Marina) Schofield of Truman, MN; three daughters, Jill (Wayne) Splitt of Wichita, KS, June (Leroy) Fedderson and Julie (Larry) McLaughlin both of Midland, SD; thirty-one grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Peter (Sylvia) Fosheim of Pierre, SD, Joe Fosheim, Ft. Pierre, SD, and Vic (Carol) Fosheim of Midland, SD; four sisters, Edith Schofield of Casper, Wyoming, Judy (George) Gerig of Sturgis, SD, Tina (Orlyn) Haug of Aurora, Colorado, Ruth (Lou) Gassner of Berthoud, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Jackie Fosheim of Murdo, and Judy Fosheim of Midland; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

  • Visiting Hank and Pauline's home is one of my most treasured memories. Whether it was in the gas truck with my Dad or riding horse out there from Midland with Jamie. She always greated you with a smile and invited you in for a snack or to play with a fresh batch of play dough. I remember those memories like they were yesterday. She was a beautiful person and I can still here her whistling and humming those beautiful tunes. She will be greatly missed. ~ Crystal Hayes, SD (4/27/2013)
  • So sorry to hear of your loss, your mom was always a great, giving & caring lady. Bless you all, you are in my thoughts & prayers. ~ Debbie Falzone Philip, SD (4/27/2013)
  • We are so very sorry. Our hearts go out to all your family as you bury another loved one, and the precious mother and grandmother of the family, so very soon after William. How difficult this time must be for you all.
May your time of gathering as family provide comfort and joyous memories. May the prayers for your comfort and the peace that passes understanding wrap around you as a warm blanket on a cold night.
God Bless you all, each and every one.
~ Rocky and Rebecca Williams Philip, SD (4/27/2013)
  • Carol and I are so very sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Pauline and so soon after the passing of Will. She was a fantastic person and it is sad that her last few years had to be so hard for her and her family. She was one of three Fosheim sisters who married three Schofield brothers and what a legacy that was and is. We will miss her and our prayers are with her and her family. ~ Matt & Carol Schofield Philip, SD (4/27/2013)
  • We will ALL miss Pauline dearly. She was one special person in our hearts. Her kind heart, her love of music; I still remember the songs she sang so beautifully i.e. Mockingbird Hill. Her love of children - always an open door to their home, no matter what time of day. Our hearts and love are with you. ~ Tina Haug 815 North Picadilly Road Aurora CO 80018 (4/27/2013)

  • We are so sorry for your loss. I know God never gives us more than we can bear, but he has asked a great deal of your family recently. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. ~ Steve and Lisa (Schofield) Jonas Pierre, SD (4/27/2013)
  • Ah, the whistling. I never new anyone that could whistle better than Pauline. I remember this too. That South Dakota wind would be blowing through the windows, the curtains would be blowing in the breeze and Pauline would be whistling those beautiful tunes that went right along with it. One of the best memories I had growing up was the long dining room table at the Schofield place. Even though the dining room was small there always seemed to be enough room at the table. Hank would be sitting at the end of the table telling stories, some of the kids might be sitting at the other end of the table playing with games or playdough, and there was always food and coffee. I don't think anybody ever went hungry there. I also remember the piano in the corner, the old fashioned sewing machine, the long bench at the table that the kids used to sit on and that really cool kitchen cabinet where the dishes were kept that opened on both sides. It was always very comfortable there. I always felt welcome. These are memories I will not forget. ~ Terri Fjellheim Hot Springs, SD (4/27/2013)
  • Dear Lucas and entire Family: Our thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace will be with you all. Love, Mike & Shar ~ Mike & Shar Moses Philip (4/27/2013)
  • Sorry to hear about your loved one, hold onto all the wonderful memories. We all know that she is at peace, she always had a smile when we would see her at the nursing home every day. Take care. ~ Les & Joann Pearson Philip, SD (4/27/2013)
  • I love the picture of Pauline, that is the Pauline I remember. Tiny, but gracious & strong! Our prayers are with you as you have to let another loved one go. ~ Ronnie & Emily Sammons Midland (4/27/2013)
  • I completely echo Terri's sentiments. There was always such a feeling of welcoming and love from Pauline and Hank's home. There are so many fond memories of running through that front screen door knowing full well there was something fun waiting - some type of crafts for the kids - my favorite was her homemade playdough. I remember the giant bowls of hamburger gravy and popcorn; the stories; the laughter. I still cherish the little zipper bag that Pauline made for me when I was about 5 or 6 that had my name on it. Pauline was a beautiful, strong loving wife, mother, aunt and friend and will be deeply missed. ~ Trisha Gertie Parker, CO (4/27/2013)
  • I am so sorry for your loss, and so soon after Will's passing. I know there will be (healing) tears and lots of laughter as you share your memories w/ each other this week. May God bless and comfort you all real good. In Christ, Beryl (Addison) Geer ~ Beryl (Addison) Geer PO Box 2018, Gillette, WY 82717-2018 (4/27/2013)
  • I am so sorry to hear about Pauline. She was kind, beautiful and always had a smile on her face. She made the best cinnamon rolls. When we had bake sales in high school, we always requested those from her! God bless and may your memories ease your loss. ~ Mary Jo Jones Midland (4/27/2013)
  • Pauline was a special lady! She and Hank were truly in love, one could tell simply by the way they looked at each other. She, and all the Fosheim women, are truly God-sent, teaching the rest of us how to selflessly give. I learned how to create a home and how to share it with others by watching these women, among others in my life. I'll never forget that red water pump in her kitchen, and being so amazed at that as a kid. Blessings and gratitude to Pauline's family! ~ Cathy (Schofield) Thrash Rapid City, SD (4/27/2013)
  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in your loss. Pauline was a lovely & gracious lady. Her heart and soul was in her family & in making a home for Hank and all of you. God's comfort and Blessing to you. Carla & Virgil ~ Carla Smith Milesville, SD (4/27/2013)
