In memory of

Zane Nelson

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Sunday, June 16, 2013 in Philip at the age of 28

Zane George Nelson was born on January 11, 1985 to Dennis and Diana (Terkildsen) Nelson in Rosebud, SD. He became the little brother to Heath Kennedy and Heather Nelson, and later the older brother of Dane Nelson, son of Dennis and Jana (Klug) Nelson.
Zane attended kindergarten in Philip and graduated from Philip High School in 2003. Zane was baptized into Christ at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka, and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Philip. He played football all four years of high school and was an outstanding wrestler, placing at the State B wrestling tournament his freshman through senior years. Zane loved everything about being outdoors, though fishing was his greatest passion. Everywhere he went, his fishing pole could be found packed in the back seat.
After graduation Zane attended Mitchell Technical Institute studying Electrical Construction and Maintenance. Upon becoming an apprentice electrician in 2005, he moved to Ft Collins, CO where he worked on numerous commercial construction projects until moving back to Philip in 2012. Zane loved the great outdoors of Colorado and took every advantage to snowboard, camp, hike, skateboard, and of course, fish.
Zane was a friend to everyone, never speaking a bad word about anyone, and possessed a knack of listening to others without judgment. He always had a contagious smile on his face and his laugh was, and always will be, unforgettable.
Grateful for having shared his life, Zane is survived by his mother, Diana (Scott) Olivier, his father, Dennis Nelson, two brothers, Heath (Kim) Kennedy and Dane (Amanda) Nelson, his sister, Heather (Nathan Kjerstad) Nelson, four nieces, Kate and Grace Kennedy and Allie and Natalie Kjerstad, maternal grandparents, Lavern and Dianne Terkildsen, and his paternal grandmother, Frances Nelson. He was preceded in death by his niece, Kaya Lynn Huling; cousin Tucker Smith; and his paternal grandfather, Jake Nelson.
Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at the Philip High School Gym, with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the Philip High School Gym, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
Cards and memorials may be send to Diana at P.O. Box 411, Philip, SD  57567, or Dennis at P.O. Box 155, Philip, SD  57567.

  • Zane will definitely be missed, but not forgotten. I'm going to miss our talks in the signshop. Zane always had a way of brightening up the place and making you smile and he had a way of making whatever sign you were working on seem really special and neat no matter what it was. We were always supposed to go fishing, he was going to teach me how to fish again and I was supposed to help him on the guitar. I'm sure he would have better luck on the guitar than I would fishing, but I definitely know we would of have a great time doing both. ~ Barry Knutson Philip, SD (6/16/2013)

  • Diana & Family I was remembering how Zane loved sports. Marty coached Zane in T-ball through A ball. All star tournament in Pierre and camping was a big event. Marty and Jerry had taken the boys and Halli out to Grandpa Bud's to camp for the weekend. Very exhausting for the adults. Campfire was started and Marty and Jerry decided to go to bed. When Marty woke up hearing the kids telling Zane to jump over the fire. Needless to say the fire had grown quite a bit since the guys had went to bed. Lots of memories as the kids grew up.
