Monte Ray Hook was born December 4, 1952, in Quinn, South Dakota, the son of Lawrence “Red” and Violet (Pippert) Hook. He was baptized December 26, 1952 at Quinn, and confirmed May 14, 1957, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. He grew up in the Philip area, graduating from Philip High School in 1971.
Monte entered the US Army on April 21, 1972. He was stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado, and honorably discharged on April 19, 1974.
After his discharge, Monte returned to Philip, and worked construction. In 1989 he went to work for Odom Farms. In 1994 he started working for the City of Philip. Due to health reasons, Monte was forced to retire in 2004.
Monte enjoyed fishing, hunting, Nascar, and football.
Survivors include three brothers Dwilyn “PeeWee” Hook and his wife Peggy of Philip, Darwin Hook of Wall, and Jerryce Hook and his wife Elaine of Rapid City; one sister Juanita Carroll and her husband Tom of Stanwood, Washington; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Monte was preceded in death by his father Lawrence “Red” Hook on January 3, 1971; his mother Violet (Pippert) Hook on September 8, 1993; and two brothers Verlyn and Larry Hook.
Interment with military honors was held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 11, at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip, with Pastor Ray Greenseth officiating.
A memorial gathering and time of remembrance was held 4-7 p.m. Saturday, at the Legion Hall in Philip.
