Cathy C. Patton was born January 18, 1962, in Quinn, South Dakota, the daughter of Leo and Joan (Stephenson) Patton of Milesville. She was baptized and received her first communion at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Milesville. She lived on the ranch in Milesville, and received her elementary education at Plum Creek rural school and Philip Elementary School. Cathy graduated from Philip High School in 1980.
Cathy was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Knight at the Presbyterian Church in Philip on September 19, 1980. They resided in Milesville, working on various ranches. They were blessed with three children, April Marie born January 14, 1981, Seth David born April 27th 1983, and Melissa Jo born December 13, 1984.
In February 1985, they moved to Philip where Bob was employed by Scotchman Industries and later the Philip Post Office. Cathy held several jobs including Corky’s Super Valu, Philip Veterinary Service, and State Farm Insurance. She began her own business as an American Family Insurance Agent in 1996, where she continued to work until her death.
Cathy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Evening Guild. She was also a member of the Philip Chamber of Commerce, BPW, and various church groups. Cathy was active in 4-H, was a leader of Girl Scouts, coached gymnastics, and baseball, and was a member of the Cancer Support Group.
Cathy enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, hunting, playing softball, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with family.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband Robert Knight of Philip; a son Seth Knight of Rapid City; two daughters April and Melissa Knight, both of Rapid City; a granddaughter Kaitlyn Knight of Rapid City; her father and mother, Leo and Joan Patton of Milesville; a brother Bill Patton and his wife Michelle of Eagan, Minnesota; six sisters Barbara Howe and her husband Denny of The Woodlands, Texas, Sharon Kauffman and her husband George of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carol Kroetch and her husband Ralph Jr. of Philip, Linda Stangle and her husband Jim of Milesville, Janet Penland and her husband Terry of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Susan Jones and her husband David of Le Sueur, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cathy was preceded in death by one brother Richard Patton in infancy, and her grandparents.
Cathy C. Knight, age 42, of Philip, South Dakota, died Tuesday morning, November 16, 2004, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a long battle with cancer.
Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Philip High School Armory.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 20, at the Philip High School Armory, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.
