of Midland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, December 31, 2000 at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 79
Kenneth Wayne Anderson, better known as Kink, was born August 21, 1921, at Midland, South Dakota, to William and Olive (Seward) Anderson.
Kink attended grade school in the Ottumwa area and graduated from Midland High School in 1938 at the age of 16. He and his friend, Willie Drew, then "hopped" on the freight train and "bummed" their way to Oregon where his aunt lived. He worked in the Oregon saw mills, and later returned to the Midland area where he worked at several jobs until joining the Army Air Corp in 1942. He served in England and France in the 352nd Fighter Squadron until his discharge in 1945.
Kink was united in marriage to Anna Marie Roseth on February 23, 1943, at Atlantic City, New Jersey. After returuning from the service in 1945, Kink was employed by Archie Joy Enterprises and Harold (Stub) Joy until 1949.
In 1950 he and Danny Mulcahy went into partnership, starting the A & M Grocery Store. They operated it together until 1953 when Kink sold his interest to Danny.
Kink was appointed the Midland Postmaster in 1954. His wife, Marie, began working at the post office as a clerk at this time. Marie retired in 1979 and Kink reitred in 1981.
Kink was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. he was also active in the Commerical Club, served on the Midland school board, and was a member of the American Legion.
When Kink was nine years old, he started a life-long hobby of wood-carving, creating numerous detailed chains, tools, wagons, stagecoaches, and other wooden pieces. These works of art are on display in family homes and in the High Plains Heritage Museum in Spearfish. One of Kink's favorite activities was singing and playing guitar, banjo, and mandolin with his friends and his son.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marie Anderson of Midland; his daughters, Judy Daly of Midland, LaVonne Wheeler and her husband, Bill, of Newcastle, WY; his son, Dr. Wayne Anderson and his wife, April, of Spearfish, SD; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Kink was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Maurice and Curt; and one grandon Patrick Daly.
