of Philip, South Dakota, died on Monday, March 20, 2000 at his home in Philip at the age of 64
Harold L. McDaniel was born September 9, 1935, on his parents' homestead north of Philip, South Dakota, the son of Lawrence F. and Virgie Mae (Craig) McDaniel.
He grew up on the homestead and received his education in the Philip area. As a young man he served in the U.S. Army in Puerto Rico from 1954 to 1956. After his discharge he returned to the homestead.
Harold was united in marriage to Shirley Welfl on December 21, 1956, in Philip. To this union was born four children: Bill, Steve, Shelia, and Judith.
They made their home on the homestead, which they continued to operate all their married life. He and his brothers had a sheep shearing crew, which they operated in the surrouding area. He later taught his sons the business and he stepped down from the crew.
His wife, Shirley, preceded him in death on March 5, 1994. Harold continued to reside on the ranch.
He was united in marriage to Gaye Odom on April 26, 1995, at Philip. They made their home north of Philip.
Harold continued to operate the homestead with his two sons and their families. Harold normally started his day having coffee with his family and friends at the Philip Sale Barn. He was very much a family man and enjoyed being with his family - operating the family ranch with his sons and their families; fishing and hunting with his family and friends. Most of all, he looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada with his fishing buddies.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gaye McDaniel of Philip; two sons, William "Bill" McDaniel and his wife, Diane, and their four children, Billie Jo, Courtney, Nikki, and Colton, all of Philip; Steve McDaniel and his wife, Theresa, and their four children, Cole, Colton T., Christopher, and Tucker, all of Philip; two daughters, Shelia Trask and her husband, Tom, and their three children, Mark Harold, Mick Daniel, and Tomilyn, all of Elm Springs; and Judith Radway and her husband, R.
