In memory of

Marian Hansen

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Sunday, March 12, 2000 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 79

Marian I. Johnson was born July 24, 1920, on a farm near Milesville, South Dakota, the daughter of Elmer and Myrtle (Radway) Johnson.

She grew up on the farm and attended the Top Bar Rural School in that area prior to graduating from Philip High School in 1938.  She received her teaching certificate from Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish.  She taught rural school in the Milesville area.

Marian was united in marriage to Edward Hansen on June 2, 1942, at Milesville.

They made their home on a farm northeast of Philip, but she continued to teach in the Milesville and Grindstone communities.  In 1953, they moved into Philip where she worked as a clerk for West Central Electric for a couple of years.

She returned to teaching and taught in the Quinn and Cottonwood area.  In 1958, the family moved to Quinn and then returned to Philip in 1960.  She then taught in the Philip area.  She continued her education throughout her teaching career and on August 14, 1970, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish.

Marian taught the last 24 years of her career in the Philip Elementary School system, from which she retired on May 22, 1986, after 36 years of teaching.

Marian was a member of the First Lutheran Church.  She was a member and had served as Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Philip Chapter #100; was a member of the Bad River Senior Citizens; and she and Edward managed the Masonic Cemetery for the past 21 years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Edward Hansen of Philip; a son, Russell Hansen and his wife, Dorothy, of Philip; two daughters, Sharon Cassel and her husband, Terry, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Pam Semmler and her husband, Jim, of Rapid City; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Merle "M.C." Johnson of Philip and Darrell Johnson of Sioux Falls; a sister, Shirley Buls and her husband, Bill, of Philip; and a host of other relatives and friends.
