of Midland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, January 31, 1999 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 75
Lucy Alvina Bonhorst was born April 7, 1923, on her parents' homestead in Stanley County, near Van Metre, South Dakota, the daughter of Charles and Minnie (Grupe) Bonhorst.
She grew up on the homestead and attended various schools in Minnesota while making her home with her uncle, the Pastor Victor Grupe. Lucy graduated from Maple Lake High School in 1940.
Lucy was united in marriage to Gust A. Larson on October 7, 1941, on her parents' homestead near Van Metre.
They made their home in St. Paul, Minnesota, until Gust left for the Marine Corps during World War II. While Gust was gone, Lucy spent most of her time on the homestead near Van metre until Gust's return from the military. They continued to reside in St. Paul until moving to Midland in 1953.
While in Midland, they owned and operated Midland Grain and Lumber. Lucy kept the books for the family business until their retirement in January of 1989.
Lucy was a member of Tinity Lutheran Church and Ruth Circle of the chuch. She was a member of the Midland American Legion Auxiliary of Midland and the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary of Philip. She enjoyed gardening and raising beautiful roses.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Gust Larson of Midland; sons, Larry Larson and his wife, Jean, and their two children, Leah and Travis, all of Marion, Iowa, Charlie Larson and his wife, Sophie, of Midland, and their children, Renee of Kadoka, Todd of Rapid City, and Jim of Midland; the children of her son, Scott: Ronnie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Greg of Box Elder, and Kathy of Hiawatha, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Merina and Bryan; four brothers, Carl Bonhorst of Portland, Oregon, Leonard Bonhorst of Tucson, Arizona, Walter Bonhorst of Huachua City, Arizona, and Paul Bonhorst of Pierre; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lucy was preceded in death by a son, Scott Larson, on January 16, 1989; her parents; and two brothers, Norbert and Lewis.
A memorial has been established.
