In memory of

Maurice Handcock

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at his home in Kadoka at the age of 58

Maurice Donald Handcock was born January 10, 1956, in Kadoka, South Dakota, the youngest of four children born to Donald and Joyce (Mansfield) Handcock. He grew up on their farm-ranch northwest of Long Valley and graduated from Kadoka High School in 1974.

He learned the value of hard work early driving tractors/trucks from late childhood. He truly loved farming and ranching and considered being a good neighbor was having a good neighbor.

Maurice was united in marriage to Cathie Uhlir on June 20, 1975 in Kadoka, and to this union were born four children, Tyler, Tucker, Tanner and Abbi. They resided on the ranch northwest of Long Valley until 1996 where he raised wheat, cattle and his family. After leaving the ranch, Maurice and family moved to Kadoka and he worked various jobs until he began a career managing the CHS Grain Elevator in Kadoka for the next ten years. Maurice began his career with Crew Agency, Ltd in the spring of 2007. He truly loved his job and all the people he worked with. His customers were very important to him. He loved going to work and took great pride in everything that he ever did. His greatest loves in life were his wife, kids, grandkids, and friends. Maurice always had a smile and he always had time for everyone. His positive attitude was infectious.

A perfect weekend for Maurice was spending time with Cathie whether it was a round of golf or chasing grandkids and kids or watching them at their events.

Survivors include his wife Cathie of Kadoka; twin sons Tucker Handcock (Ashley) of Rapid City and Tyler Handcock (Dan Veranth) of Austin, Texas; a son Tanner Handcock (Kim) of Wall; daughter Abbi McDaniel (Colton) of Philip; seven grandchildren Jackson Handcock, Dawson, Hallie, and twins Reese and Davis Handcock, and Mayzie and Jetta McDaniel; one brother Ben Handcock (Patsy) of Brighton, Colorado; two sisters Bonnie Ferguson (Owen) of Long Valley, and Kathy Rock (Jim) of Long Valley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Maurice was preceded in death by his father Donald Handcock on October 22, 1988, and his mother Joyce M. Handcock on May 5, 2012.

Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with a prayer service at 6:30.

Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, at the Kadoka City Auditorium with Dave Ohrtman officiating.

Interment was at the Kadoka Cemetery.

  • i'm saddened by the news. I never got a chance to know Maurice as an adult or to meet his wife or children. I knew him as a young boy, irritating his sister to death as we played as cousins do. Kathy would be very irritated with him and then protect him fiercely, as sisters do. I loved Maurice for the boy he was and regret not getting to know him as the wonderful man he sounds like he became.
