In memory of

Pansie M. Berke

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, October 8, 1992 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 85

Pansie M. Hawkey was born March 15, 1907, in Wagner, South Dakota, to Edwin and Etta (Adams) Hawkey.

As a child she moved with her parents to a homestead near Cottonwood, South Dakota.  After proving up on the homestead, the family returned to the Wagner area in 1917 where they resided until returning to the Cottonwood area.  She grew up there and graduated from Cottonwood High School.  Pansie then attended Black Hills Normal in Spearfish where she obtained her teaching certificate.  She taught rural schools for 11 years in Jackson, Haakon, and Pennington counties.

Pansie was united in marriage to Alvin F. Berke on May 31, 1936, on the Berke homestead in the Hilland, South Dakota, area.

They purchased the Berke homestead in 1938 and continued to operate the farm-ranch.  Pansie taught another 11 years in Haakon County rural schools.  They semi-retired in 1975 and built a home in Black Hawk, South Dakota, where they lived on weekends and during the winter months.  In 1986 they moved into West Hills Village in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Her husband preceded her in death on February 29, 1992.

Pansie was a former member of the Hilland Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid of the church.  After the church closed, they became members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in the Grindstone community.  She was an active 4-H leader for many years and was a member of the Hilland Extension Club, the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association, as well as the Philip Retired Teachers Association.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Duane Berke of Black Hawk; her twin daughters, Arlyce (Mrs. John) Griesel of Philip and Arlene (Mrs. Ken) Everett of Mountain Home, Idaho; six grandchildren: Jeff Griesel and his wife, Trace, of Houston, Texas; Lynette (Mrs. Dan) Pueppke of Farmer, South Dakota; Kristi Everett of Boise, Idaho; Kerri Everett of Moscow, Idaho; Steve Berk and Brett Berke, both of Black Hawk, South Dakota; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, and Christophoer Pueppke, all of Farmer, South Dakota; one brother, Ed Hawkey of Portland, Oregon; six sisters: Goldie Radway of Eugene, Oregon; Jeannie Anderson of Hitchcock, South Dakota; Grace (Mrs. Harvey) Hildebrandt of DeSmet, South Dakota; Mable Beckman of Puyallup, Washington; Edythe Rogers of Tacoma, Washington; and Norma (Mrs. Richard) Colegate of Tacoma, Washingon; and a host of other relatives and friends.
