In memory of

Alice I. Brooks

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, December 13, 1991 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 80

Alice I. Stinson was born May 10, 1911, to Elias Putman and Viola (Day) Stinson on her parents' homestead in Old Stanley County near the Ottumwa area.

She grew up in that area and received her education in country schools and then attended Marrietta High School in the Hartley area prior to attending Philip High School.

Alice was united in marriage to Marvin Edward Brooks on January 9, 1930, at Philip, South Dakota.

They made their home on the Brooks familiy homestead 17 miles north of Philip.  Her husband owned and operated a gravel truck, hauling gravel for the state.

In 1944 they purchased the present Brooks Ranch, which they operated in conjunction with their soil conservation construction business.  In 1946, while their sons were in high school, they purchased a home in Philip where Alice would reside with their sons during the school year and then move back to the ranch in the summer months.

In 1970 they retired and moved into Philip.

Her husband preceded her in death on June 1, 1973.

Alice has since resided in Philip, but would travel around visiting her children and grandchildren, which she greatly enjoyed.

Alice was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #100, and the Bad River Senior Citizens Center, all of Philip.  Alice and her husband were very sports-minded and traveled many, may miles while their sons where playing sports in grade school, high school and college.  Alice threw the game ball in to start the first game during the State Teener Baseball Tournament held in Philip in August of 1986.

Grateful for having shared her life are her five sons: Arlie Brooks of Reedley, California; Darral Brooks of Philip; George Brooks of Gregoryl; Dale Brooks of Sturgis; and Gary Brooks of Pierre; 17 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Van Cleve of Sturgis, Viola Heezen of Blane, Washington, and Marie Gartner of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Jerry, as an infant; two brothers, John and Arthur Stinson; and one sister, Blanche Peterson.
