Dorothy L. Kennedy

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, December 26, 1990 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 74

Dorothy L. Aaberg was born July 5, 1916, at Hot Springs, South Dakota, to Olaf and Susie (Carter) Aaberg.

She grew up on a ranch near Hot Springs and graduated from Hot Springs High School.  In 1939 she graduated from South Dakota State University as a Home Economics major.  While at S.D.S.U. she won the Equestrian Contest during the Little International in 1937.

Dorothy taught at the Wall High School for one year prior to working for the U.S. Farm Home Administration as a Home Economist at McIntosh, South Dakota.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Howard Kennedy on March 18, 1941, at Broadus, Montana.

A short time later they made their home in Philip where she and Howard both taught at the Philip High School.  She taught at various times until 1972.

In November 1944 they purchased the Pritchard Implement Company in Philip.  Later, Howard's brother, Wayne, joined as a partner in establishing the Kennedy Implement and Auto Company as well as the Kennedy Ranch.

Dorothy was a member of the United Church.  She served as church trustee from 1957 to 1960, and as an elder from 1961 to the present time.  She served three terms as president of the United Presbyterian Women and held various Presbyterial state offices.  She was a member of the Philip Chapter #100 and Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worothy Matron in 1954 and 1955.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Howard Kennedy, of Philip; three sons, Dennis Kennedy of Philip, Kent Kennedy of Seattle, Washington, and Scott Kennedy of Philip; one daughter, Judy Olney of Philip; six grandchildren, Heather, Shane and Kempton Olney, and Radley, Tyrel and Blayne Kennedy; two sisters, Esther Hussong of San Diego, California, and Ruth Bonine of Worland, Wyoming; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Berton Aaberg; and two sisters, Marie Ellis and Grace Bailey.
