In memory of

Carl J. Hovland

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Monday, October 1, 1990 at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 88

Carl J. Hovland was born November 15, 1901, at Rushmore, Minnesota, to Severin and Martha (Erstad) Hovland.

In 1908 he moved with his parents to a homestead in Old Stanley County, eight miles northwest of Nowlin, South Dakota.

He grew up in the Nowlin area and received his education in rural schools in that area.

He farmed and ranched the homestead with his mother and brother, Anton.  He also worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in the bridge and construction crew.

After his mother's death, Carl owned and operated the homestead until his retirement in the late 1960's.  He continued to live on the ranch until illness forced him into the Philip Nursing Home in August of 1982.

Carl was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Midland.  He was very fond of music and was very capable of playing the accordian, mouth organ, and the violin.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two brothers, Severt Hoveland of Wall, and Reuben Hovland of Custer, South Dakota; two sisters, Anna Nelson of Philip, and Sadie Edwards of Custer; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Anton and John.
