In memory of

Irene B. Meland

of Spearfish, South Dakota, formerly of Philip, South Dakota, died on Saturday, February 6, 1988 at her home in Spearfish at the age of 66

Irene Barbara Weisbrod, daughter of Fredrick and Carrie Weisbrod, was born November 23, 1921, at Markinch, Saskatchewan, Canada.

She grew up and received her education in that area.  She was confirmed in the Methodist faith.  As a young lady she moved to the state of Washington where she worked as a waitress.

Irene was united in marriage to Lawrence B. Meland on February 19, 1942, at the army base in Washington.  She became a naturalized citizen of the United States shorly after her marriage.

They made their home in Washington until Lawrence's discharge from the service.  They moved to South Dakota where they made their home in various places in northwestern South Dakota and southern North Dakota.  Her husband, being a railroad employee, caused them to move to various towns.

In 1981 she moved to Philip, South Dakota, where she was employed at the Philip Nursing Home as a nurse's aide, and later she worked as a waitress at the Park Inn Cafe until retiring in 1986.

She continued to live in Philip until moving to Spearfish, South Dakota, in 1987.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Dorcas Circle of the church ALCW, and also attended the Bad River Senior Citizen's Center, all of Philip.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husbnad, Lawrence "Scotty" Meland, of Spearfish, South Dakota; four sons, Ronald of Portland, Oregon, Omar of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Ricky of Yankton, South Dakota, and Larry of Okinawa, Japan; four daughers, Lois Durbin of Glasgow, Montana, Sharon (Mrs. Rev. Tom) Dunham of Philip, South Dakota, Lorene Meland of Spearfish, South Dakota, and Connie (Mrs. Gary) Ramsey of Colstrip, Montana; 30 grandchildren; three brothers, Alan, Fred, and Larry Weisbrod, all of Candada; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers.
