In memory of

Margaret M. Huston

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Saturday, August 1, 1987 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 89

Margaret M. Huston was born January 13, 1898, at Kansas City, Missouri, to Joseph and Margaret (Coughlin) McCullough.  As a young girl she moved with her mother, brothers, and sisters to a homestaed near Okaton.  She grew up and received her elementary education in that area, prior to graduating from Okaton High School.

She worked at the Okaton Bank and later received her teaching certificate and taught at the White Bell Country School in South Creek Towsnhip, near Okaton.  All nine of her children attended school there.

Margaret was united in marriage to Jack Huston on May 17, 1917, at Kadoka.  They lived on a ranch next to the original Huston homestead, located east of Midland in Jones County.  They operated the ranch until Jack's death on February 11, 1970.

Margaret moved into Midland, where she made her home prior to moving into the Philip Nursing Home in 1980.

She was a member of St. William's Catholic Church in Midland, was active with the Red Cross during World War II, and was a gold star mother.

Margaret also was active in establishing the first barb wire telephone company in the South Creek area, under the direction of Northwestern Bell Company.  Margaret was instrumental in starting the South Creek Literary Society and also served on the South Creek School Board for several years.  She helped start the Midland Senior Citizens Center and served as its first president.

Survivors include four sons, Jack Jr. of Sturgis, Rex of Hill City, Joe of Hulett, Wyoming, and Huey of Midland; four daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary Jane) Dugan of Rapid City, Mrs. Charles (JoAnn) Flyte of Moorcroft, Wyoming, Mrs. Ronald (Marguerite) Dennis of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Sharon Robison of Fort Bragg, California; 31 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Tom McCullough of Lusk, Wyoming, and Frank McCullough of Riverton, Wyoming.

She was preceded in death by a son, Arthur, who died during World War II; two grandsons, Robert Robison and Donald Huston; a granddaughter in infancy; two brothers, John McCullough and Bill McCullough; and two sisters, Anna Petrik and Josie Boland.
