In memory of

Chester Calhoon

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Thursday, July 24, 1986 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 74

Chester Calhoon, son of Frank W. and May (Moore) Calhoon, was born June 13, 1912, in Midland, South Dakota.  He grew up and received his education in Midland.

As a young man he moved to California where he worked five years in the Los Angeles area.  He returned to the family farm-ranch located southwest of Midland in the mid 1930's.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Seidler Calhoon, the widow of his brother, Pat Calhoon, on June 20, 1951, at Fort Pierre, South Dakota.  To this marriage was born a son, Chester Robert Calhoon.

His wife preceded him in death on March 24, 1984.

Chester attended the Open Bible Church in Midland.  He was a member of the American Hereford Assocation, being especially interested in the Anxiety IV Line of Hereford Cattle and his collection of Hereford books has been donated to the Midland Community Library.  He was an officer and director of the Midland Pioneer Museum Assocation and a member of the Pioneer Club of Western South Dakota.  He was active in the South Dakota Beef Improvement Association and the Jones County Beef Improvement Assocation.

He was a former member of the Midland Masonic Lodge #183, and at the time of his death was a member of the Philip Masonic Lodge #153.

He was an active member of the South Creek Township government and has served on the Midland Community Fire Department for many years.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Chester Robert Calhoon and Kenneth David Calhoon, both of Midland; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph D. (Maxine) Jones of Midland, and Mrs. Larry (Mary) Nemec of Pierre, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; one brother, Nathan Calhoon of Eldon, Missouri; three sisters, Virginia Ruth Gerritsen of San Francisco, California, Evelyn Carroll of Greenwood, Mississippi, and Eunice Underwood of Silver Spring, Maryland; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Margaret, he was preceded in death by a step-brother, Karol Calhoon, his parents, and three brothers, Gordon Calhoon, Kenneth "Pat" Calhoon, an Donald Calhoon.
