John G. Olsen was born June 28, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Susan Olsen.  When he was three, his parents moved to a farm near Mitchell, South Dakota.  In 1908, they homesteaded in the Hartley area northwest of Philip, where he grew up.

On November 24, 1923, he was united in marriage to Nora Abrahamson at Philip.  They farmed and ranched in the Hartley area until moving to Philip in 1979.

John was a member of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Nora, of Philip; a son, John Grant Olsen of Rapid City; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Lester S. Dexter of Los Angeles, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Delores Jean Olsen, in 1974, one brother, and one sister.

A memorial has been established.
