of New Underwood, South Dakota, died on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at the Regional Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City at the age of 76
David A. Bale was born March 20, 1940, in Spearfish, South Dakota, the son of Bartlett and Wilma (Hyde) Bale. He grew up on the Cheyenne River and attended McMahon rural school in the Folsom area. He then attended New Underwood High School graduating in 1958.
After high school, he worked for Western Cattle Company for a short time. After a brief time in California, David moved to Hermosa where he started working construction.
David was united in marriage on March 18, 1978, to Diane Strothman in Hermosa. They made their home on the Cheyenne River where he ranched, before he settled in New Underwood in 1988. David was a cowboy and rancher at heart, and continued to work construction until retiring.
He was very proud of all his kids and grandkids, and supported them in everything they participated in, especially rodeo. He was a true cowboy, and enjoyed driving around looking at the country. David was very witty, and didn’t hesitate to poke fun at someone or something. He thoroughly enjoyed cooking, and there was never a bad time for a cold beer.
Survivors include seven children Bartlett Jack Bale and his wife Lori of Chandler, Arizona, Angie Venjohn and her husband Mike of Sturgis, Tami Phillips and her husband Lee of Owanka, Deana Fulton and her husband Terrance of Hermosa, Catana Bale of Rapid City, Teresa Gossard of New Underwood, and Martha Bickford and her husband Randy of Newcastle, Wyoming; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister Wanda Edoff of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.
David was preceded in death by his wife Diane; his parents Bartlett and Wilma Bale; and two brothers Philip and Marvin Bale; and his favorite horse “Blue”.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the Folsom Cemetery near Folsom.
