In memory of

Bill Hustead

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Monday, October 4, 1999 at his home in Wall at the age of 72

Bill Hustead was born June 21, 1927, at his grandmother's house in Colman, South Dakota. Three generations of Hustead's grandparents homesteaded in South Dakota. In 1931, his family moved to Wall, purchasing the Wall Drug Store. Bill attended grade school at Wall Public School and graduated from Trinity High School in Sioux City, Iowa. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1946, having been trained as a combat air crewman. Mr. Hustead then spent five years in the Navy Reserve. Bill attended South Dakota State University, receiving his degree in pharmacy in 1950.

In 1949, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Ann Rensch, a union which was blessed with seven children: Richard, Theodore, Kelly (Engelhart) Suzette (Kirby), Jayme (Chapman), Jon, and Patrick. Bill and Marjorie have 17 grandchildren. In 1951, Mr. Hustead joined his father in business at the Wall Drug Store, becoming president in 1972.

Bill served in the South Dakota State Legislature, four years in the House and two years in the Senate. He was chairman of the Wall City Council for 25 years, and was a past chairman of the South Dakota Transportation Commission and the South Dakota Railroad Board.

Bill was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #1 of Paris, France, as well as being a past commander of American Legion Post #246 of Wall, South Dakota. He was also past president of the Western South Dakota Buckaroos.

In 1999, Bill received an honorary doctor's degree from South Dakota State University.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marjorie Hustead of Wall; three sons, Richard Hustead and his wife, Patt, of Wall, Theodore Hustead and his wife, Karen, of Wall, and Patrick Hustead and his wife, Monica, of Denver, Colorado; three daughters, Kelly Engelhart and her husband, Tim, of Denver, Colorado, Suzette Kirby and her husband, Steve, of Sioux Falls, and Jayme Chapman and her husband, Rich, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren; a brother, Charles Hustead and his wife, Esther, of Topeka, Kansas; two siters, Mary Bottum of Los Angeles, California, and Catherine Roe and her husband, Tom, also of Los Angeles; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by a son, Jon Hustead; his parents, Theodore and Dorothy Hustead; and a brother-in-law, Ros Bottum.

The family requests memorials be established to the South Dakota School of Pharmacy.
