of Wasta, South Dakota, died on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital at the age of 81
Daren Ray Nachtigall was born July 5, 1935, in New Underwood, South Dakota, the son of John and Lura (Roberts) Nachtigall. He grew up in the Lakeside area, and attended the Simons Rural School, before attending New Underwood High School, graduating in 1951. He then attended South Dakota State College, graduating in 1953. He came back and worked on the ranch for five years, before entering the US Army in 1958. He was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, which is where he met Mary Louise Conklin.
In 1960, Daren and Mary Lou were united in marriage in New York. After their marriage they made their home in the Lakeside area, where he raised cattle and sheep, and later Pinto horses. While he was at the ranch, he also worked at Black Hills Refuge in Rapid City.
His wife Mary Lou succumbed to cancer and preceded him in death in 1982. He continued to make his home on the ranch until moving into Prairie Village in 2008. He met and made a lot of great friends at Prairie Village and enjoyed his time there. In 2013, he moved to Wasta with his daughter Ramona and son-in-law Travis, where he has since resided.
Daren was an active member of the American Legion Post of New Underwood, The Saddle Tramps, and the Pinto Horse Association, and a big part of the Old Settlers Association. For many years, Daren was the sexton of the Lakeside Cemetery.
One of Daren’s greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. Daren enjoyed fishing, cribbage, dancing, bowling and horseshoes. In his later years, he grew fond of reading.
Survivors include two daughters Ramona Grenstiner and her husband Travis of Wasta, and Tammy Green of Wasta; four grandchildren Shane Green and Kelly (Josh Moran) Green, and Madi and Ash Grenstiner; one sister Kay (Jack) Overland of Red Owl; five sister-in-laws Bobbi Bloom of Rapid City, Debra Nachtigall of Lakeside, and Margaret Nachtigall of Lakeside, Phyllis Guller of Orange, Texas, Judy Bice of Pittsfield, New York; a brother-in-law Richard Conklin of Pittsfield, New York; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
