In memory of

William K. "Chub" Heltzel

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital at the age of 79

William Kenneth “Chub” Heltzel, Jr. was born April 3, 1937, at South Creek, South Dakota, the son of William Kenneth Heltzel, Sr. and Marien (Oien) Heltzel. He grew up in the South Creek community and attended grade school at South Creek Country School. He then attended Kadoka High School, graduating in 1955.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Jetter in 1955; and to this union were born three children, Bill, Margo, Kelly. He attended USD for two years, before moving to Rapid City, where he owned and operated a barber shop.

In 1968 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Hellesund in Rapid City; and to this union was born a son Mark, and joined Carolyn’s son Rick. They made their home in Kadoka, where Chub worked for the City of Kadoka, and later as Jackson County Deputy Sheriff.

In 1978, they purchased the Leota Kusick ranch, 10 miles west of Midland, where they have since resided. Chub ranched and raised cattle, and loved his horses.

Over the years, Chub has given away numerous horses and puppies to all the grandchildren, and neighbor kids. He attended numerous cattle and horse sales, either live or on the internet. He thoroughly enjoyed the country and all that South Dakota has to offer.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn Heltzel of Midland; one daughter Margo Murray of Los Angeles, California; three sons Rick LeVeque and his wife Carla of Rapid City, Kelly Heltzel and his wife Kayla of Acton, California, and Mark Heltzel and his wife Annie of Spearfish; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law Vida Mohan of Midland; a brother-in-law Howe Hopkins of Franklin, Maine; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Chub was preceded in death by his parents; his son William Kenneth “Bill” Heltzel; his twin sister Willemina Katherine “Punk” Schrader; and a sister Eva Mae Hopkins; a son-in-law Michael Murray.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 27th at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Duane Neugebauer and Pastor Gus Craven officiating.
