Lonny Loyd Carlson

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Monday, August 13, 2007
in Kadoka, South Dakota at the age of 54

Lonny Loyd Carlson was born May 12, 1953, in Kadoka, South Dakota, the son of Leonard and Lillian (Erickson) Carlson. He grew up on his parents’ ranch northeast of Kadoka, where he attended grade school at South Creek Country School graduating from the eighth grade. He then attended Kadoka High School, graduating in 1971.

Lonny was united in marriage to Tammy O’Bryan Prang on January 3, 1976, and to this union were born three children, Jessy James, Frank James, and Lonnie Jo. Lonny and Tammy ran the Belvidere Bar for many years. Then he lived and worked in Arthur, Nebraska, Howes Corner, and Malta, Montana, working on ranches. He moved to Interior, South Dakota, where he owned and operated the Horseshoe Bar and worked at the Wagon Wheel Bar.

Lonny was united in marriage to Shirley Wilcox on June 7, 1990, in Rapid City, South Dakota. They made their home in Interior.

His lifelong passion was trading horses, pigs, chickens, milk cows, or whatever he had.

He always had a gentle horse he could bring into the bar, and his famous steer "Radar" which he broke to ride in many local parades around the country.

The last nine months he was cared for by his children, grandchildren, and close family members.

He was a very caring and loving dad, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. Lonny easily made friends with whomever passed through.

Survivors include his wife Shirley Carlson of Interior; two sons Jessy James Carlson and his wife Valerie J. of Belle Fourche, and Frank James Carlson and Euretta Kerns of Minatare, Nebraska; one daughter Lonnie Jo Doney and her husband Gabe of Rapid City; seven step-children; seven grandchildren Colton, Corter and Camden Doney, Cade and Trey Lyle Carlson, and Vesta Jo and Kaktis Charles Carlson; his parents Leonard and Lillian Carlson of Kadoka; four brothers Larry Carlson and his wife Robin of Pierre, Charlie Carlson and his wife Kathleen of Kadoka, Mark Carlson and his wife Tammy of Kadoka, and James Carlson of Kadoka; four sisters Glenda Carlson of Kadoka, Marlene Perault and her husband Mike of Belvidere, Lavonne Leonard and her husband Joe of Cades, South Carolina, and Lesa Addison and her husband Sid of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lonny was preceded in death by a brother Lenus as a child.

Visitation was held 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the auditorium on Thursday.

Leonard, Lillian, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, and the rest of the extended family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Just last Thursday (8-9-07) I played a game of dice with him and a few more people. We had many laughs that night as Lonny would tell us stories of his life and how he would "cheat" at the dice game. I can not remember a time that Lonny did not have a smile on his face. He always has a hello and time for a short or long visit. He will be truely missed by everyone. Keep the memories close and the family closer. Take care and God Bless you. Lonny was a very special person to me. I have known Lonny all of my life and am proud to say that I have many, many fond memories of Lonny. My favorite memories of Lonny are from the perspective of a 5 year old little girl, who couldn't wait for Lonny to stop by to see my dad. I always admired Lonny for being himself, and no one else. Lonny was liked for who he was and will be deeply missed. I wanted the family to know that I am thinking about them, and that I wish I was there. Take care.

~ Beth (Uhlir) Feddersen & Family Murdo, SD (8/13/2007)
I would like to extend my sympathy to the Carlson family. I also would like to say that I'm proud to know that Jesse and Frank took care of their Dad in the time of need. The two boys and Lonnie Jo took him in and cared for him until end, not what alot of people could do and they did it and not knowing it was there time to say goodbye. The last nine months of Lonny's life was spent with his kids and grandkids and that was a gift from above.
   ~ Annonymous (8/13/2007)
I am so sorry to hear of Lonny's passing. My boys & I happened to run into him at the Western Cafe in Gordon a couple of weeks ago-he and another gentleman were on their way to pick up a bull from the vet (If I remember correctly). We had a nice visit... reminisced & laughed about stories of my dad (Dewey) and also of the street dances & "social gatherings" we have had together over the years. Lonny could always make me laugh & I will miss his smile. I am so glad we had that chance-encounter, as my last memories are filled with laughter & his smile. In classic Lonny style, he never let on to me of his deteriorating health problems (I'd like to thank the gentleman with him for staying behind a minute to fill me in). It saddens me that I'm unable to attend the services, but please know that I am with you in spirit & heart. Thoughts & prayers. Ang.

Our sympathy to all the family. My brief encounter with Lonny and Radar was here in Kadoka. A saddle was on Radar and even though it was a hot day, steer and Lonny patiently gave rides up and down the street. How a person treats animals and people speaks more than words. May memories be plentiful and good.

To he entire family of Lonny~~
Loosing Lonny leaves a big hurt in your heart. Each one has a different feeling, a different hurt depending on how Lonny was a part or your life. The grief and pain is something that you don't think will fade but as the days pass the hurt heals and the pain is replaced by memories. May those memories sustain and carry you thru as you live on. I think there is one major thing that Lonny taught us in his short life. It has to be - live life to the fullest. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Chuck & Janet

Remembering Lonny and thinking of all of his family & friends and how much he'll be missed. I grew up with Lonny & since I didn't have a big brother, he was it. His horse was kinda mean when we were kids so I knew he was tough & I looked up to him. He was always a friend to me and to so many. He'll sure be missed and I'm sorry he had to go. I send my sympathy to his children, parents, sisters & brothers. Love you guys and wanted you to know I'm thinking of each one of you and remembering Lonny.
