Cly Dell Knapp

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Saturday, April 7, 2012
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 94

Cly Dell Parkin was born August 4, 1917, north of Wall, South Dakota, the daughter of Thomas and Bertha (Downing) Parkin. She attended country school and later Wall High School.
Cly was united in marriage to George Elsworth Knapp on February 5, 1937, in Rapid City, and to this union were born three children: Darvin (Glenda) Knapp, Della (Robert) Hays, and Neva (William) Hamann.
George and Cly made their first home in a tar-paper shack five miles southwest of Wall on what was known as the Chris Jacobsen place. Then in 1941, they purchased the Bergeson place which is known as H&K Ranch from George’s parents. They resided there until George’s death on April 4, 1974. Cly remained there until moving into the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood in March 2008, where she has since resided.
Cly enjoyed playing cards, gardening, square dancing, and spending time with the grandchildren playing games. She spent much time making quilts from family member’s favorite clothes and embroidered dish towels and pillow cases. She was known for the chicken noodle soup she made for brandings, and the cookies the granddaughters can’t figure out how to make.
While at the Good Samaritan Center she still enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and was always game to catch a ride with any family member going by.
Survivors include two daughters Della Hays and her husband Robert of Wall, and Neva Hamann and her husband William of Wall; a daughter-in-law Glenda Knapp of Wall; eight grandchildren Vicky (Doug) Dahl of Wall, Boe (Nancy) Knapp of Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska, Coleen (Paul) Keffeler of Sturgis, Jimmy (Amy) Hays of North Richland Hills, Texas, Lori (Steve) Peterson of Holabird, Jerry (Misty) Hays of Douglas, Wyoming, Ronda Hamann of Wall, and Ronald (Carol) Hamann of Hermosa; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; the family of Scott and Susie Kroells; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband George, Cly was preceded in death by a son Darvin Knapp; a grandson Wade Knapp; her parents; and four brothers Vinton, Gail, Ivan “Andy” and twin brother Clyde; and an infant sister.

Della and Neva: I didn't know your mother, but I know you both.. Your mother must have been a good mother cuz you are both wonderful daughters. You both have always been kind and respectful and that in itself is something that any mother would be proud of. I don't know all your family members but I wish them good health and love and I wish the legacy of kindness that Della and Neva have shown me and my daughters.

To All of Cly's Family- You are in our thoughts and prayers. Some of my best memories of her were when my brother, sisters and I would stay with her when we were young and she'd play Skipbo and Uno with us for hours. We loved her very much and will miss her dearly.

We have so many memories with Cly, from butchering chickens (she was amazing at that), spending the night at her house and getting to have our own bedrooms upstairs, and her famous chicken and noodles. I never told her that I have to use the frozen, store-bought egg noodles for my chicken and noodles. She always was and always will be so loved and cherished by our family. She took care of my parents like they were part of her family from the moment we moved to H&K Ranch.

I remember picking berries and playing cards with Grandma Cly when I was younger. She always had a wonderful smile and cheery attitude. I regrettably won't be able to make it back to the funeral.. She will be greatly missed

Please except our sincere sympathy. Cly was a wonderful lady and she touched so many people. Her smile made the room a little brighter for everyone.

We hope she is singing praises with the Lord now.

God blessed us almost 30 years ago when we went to live at H&K Ranch and next to Cly. Cly was to us and our children a mother, grandmother and friend. We will cherish all our memories with her, especially the evening visits on her back steps.Cly always has and always will have a special place in our hearts.
