Michael William Huether

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, January 29, 2014
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 57

Michael William Huether was born on November 15, 1956 in Quinn, South Dakota to William “Sonny” and Patricia “Patty” (Lyle) Huether. He was raised on his family’s ranch in the Badlands 18 miles south of Wall. He went home to be with Jesus on January 29, 2014. Mike attended school in Wall and graduated from Wall High School in 1975. He attended college at Chadron State College and Black Hills State University. Mike began working at Wall Drug Store as a cook in 1973 at the age of 16. He spent most of his 40 years with Wall Drug serving in management. At the time of his death, he held the dual position of General Manager and Human Resource Director.

Mike met the love of his life, Marilyn, in the summer of 1982 while both were working at Wall Drug. They were married on January 3, 1987 in Wall. God blessed them with five wonderful children: Bryant, Hannah, Collin, Heidi, and Austin.

Mike had a personal faith in Jesus Christ and lived this out in every interaction and relationship he had with everyone who had the privilege of meeting or knowing him. Mike took special joy and pride in his family, his friends, and his coworkers whom he dearly loved. In addition to being an outstanding dad to his own children, Mike was a father-figure and mentor to countless others, especially to his nieces, nephews and all those who spent their summers working at Wall Drug. He had a gift for making those who came from all around the world to work at Wall Drug feel at home in the community ; he treated them all like family. Mike was also well known for supporting and cheering on countless kids from multiple schools in various activities and sports.

Mike loved spending his free-time outdoors, especially down at his parents’ ranch fishing, hiking, rock hunting, and taking pictures. He enjoyed the beauty of the Black Hills as well. His family also knew him to be musically gifted. Although he was modest about his talents, he was exceptional at playing piano and guitar, as well as singing.

Mike was a well-respected pillar in the community of Wall. He had served on the boards of the Wall Clinic, the Wall Drug Store, Wall Chamber of Commerce, Badlands Natural History Association, and the Wall Cemetery.

Mike is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children Bryant, Hannah, Collin, Heidi, and Austin; his parents, Sonny and Patty Huether, all of Wall; his brothers Tim (Marie) of Martin, Tony (Marci) of Rapid City, Marty (Susan) of Wall, Will (Amy) of New Underwood, sister-in-law Lynn (Huether) Dewey (Fred) of Moorcroft, WY; his mother-in-law Joyce Chord of White Owl; numerous nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends.

He was preceded in death by his older brother Richard “Rick” Huether, his grandparents, his nephew Jacob Huether, his brother-in-law Robert “Bob” Chord, and his father-in-law Donald Chord, Sr.

Mike was a living testimony of the power of Christ’s unconditional love and God’s abundant grace. He will always be remembered for his compassion, dependability, faithfulness, hospitality, humility, integrity, selflessness, steadfast love and understanding by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Marilyn, Bryant, Hannah, Collin, Heidi and Austin, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Your dad had such a positive impact on so many people. It has been 20 years since I worked at the Drug Store, but not a week has gone by since then that I do not sit back and think how lucky I was to be able to call your dad a friend. I know I am not alone on that thought. Heaven got a lot brighter today. Thank you Mike for everything, we love you and will never forget you.

~ Mike Atkinson Goodhue, MN (1/29/2014)
To everyone in Mike's family, my deepest sympathies. Mike was one of the kindest people I have have ever known. From when I knew him in high school to the last time I went through Wall and stopped in at the drugstore, Mike always had time for his friends. No matter how much time had passed between times I saw him, you would think I had just seen him the day before. God bless all of you, and comfort you. I know Mike was a man of faith, and I have no doubt he is in Heaven, probably praying for all of us.
   ~ Eva Cheney-Hatcher Burnsville, MN (1/29/2014)
Marilyn and kids, When I think of Mike I think of a very caring and giving man. I also think of his sense of humor, the not knowing if he was serious or not. Marilyn you two were such a great match and all of you kids each have the loving, caring and giving parts of your Dad & Mom because they are so much alike. We lost a special person here on earth and God gained another angel.
   ~ Cindy Hauk Wall (1/29/2014)

The loss of Mike is heart-wrenching, not so much for him (as he loved The Lord with a solid faith), but for us left behind. There is one more star in Heaven. He was a mentor and friend for many years, and as a department head at The Store I witnessed his quiet manner and quick wit over the years. He was the glue that held so many areas of the store together under Rick and Ted's leadership. When I worked in Wall as a kid from Minnesota years ago, Grandpa Ted and Bill always told me that they were so very proud to have Mike on their staff. He was counselor, moral advisor, sports fanatic, and an awesome father who loved his family above all else. And do not forget his sense of humor which could break a serious situation down into its component parts and make you feel healed and refreshed. I will miss you my friend. My wife and our contingent from Minnesota and Wisconsin will pay you your eternal respects in person. God Bless Marilyn and the children, for Mike's legacy will live on for many decades to come, in Wall and around America. He touched many people in his "ministry" of hope and kindness. May Jesus and the Angels embrace You for Eternity. Mike was the definition of evangelism and a great example to all. May he enjoy eternity. Bill and Ted have a Wall Drug in the Sky now. God Bless the Huethers
~ Steven & Karla Burgstahler Platteville, Wisconsin (1/29/2014)

My thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family. He was truly a wonderful person and will be missed. Deb Deal said it very well - we have truly lost a wonderful stand up guy.

Deepest sympathy to Mike's family... including his store family and the entire Wall community. I worked at the store years ago starting in 93. I have traveled back through the last couple of summers with our kids on our way west. I was fortunate to have had a chance to visit with Mike on both of those occasions. It has been over 15 years since I was employed there but to Mike it could have been yesterday as he still greeted me with a hug and smile... that sincere and genuine smile. Gone way to soon...
~ Kristi (Nelson) Renner Minnesota (1/29/2014)
Marilyn and family.......We grieve with you over the loss of such an outstanding man . Through our tears we remember how Mike touched our lives and left his mark. We are the lucky ones to have known him and shared time in his life. I believe we will see his spirit in days to come, as we witness good deeds done, we will think of him and smile, and know that this ordinary man did extraordinary work by God's design. He won't be forgotten. My thoughts are with you all and the hope of comfort for you . Anne

He was a stellar man, a good friend and faithful servant. Our thoughts and prayers to all.

Marilyn and kids,

Wishing you peace and comfort in your time of mourning. I am amazed at how many people Mike touched. Putting your family and faith first is something everyone can learn from. Your marriage and the way he treated you is an example to us. He was a great mentor, even with his quiet and calm nature.

I only worked one summer at Wall Drug, but the people I met there have a special place in my heart and my memory. All of Mike's family and friends will be remembered in my prayers. Sharing memories helps share the grief...so share at every opportunity. God bless.

Our hearts are deeply saddened for Mike's family and for our special grandchildren Mary and Joe Roeder. We spent quality time with Mike our four times visiting Wall. He was personable and made us feel so thankful that Mary and Joe were in his caring hands. He was such a fine, Christian role model. He even made us feel special and welcome.

I am still in shock over the news of Mike. He holds a very special place in my heart. Through the years from the time I left for college to the present time a trip to the drug store included seeing if Mike was working so we could reconnect. He was truly a great man and one of the nicest I will ever know. My daughter Lynn has fond memories of Mike through the years including him introducing her to the backyard Trex before it was open to the public. He will be missed but the memories of Mike will live on.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Marilyn and family, I met Mike when I bought Affordable Adventures Tours out of Rapid City. Mike was always there with smile and a hug for me when I brought tour guests to Wall Drug for lunch. We all felt so welcome by his genuinely warm smile and greeting. He was such a cheerful and positive man and I am so sad that he won't be there anymore. But, I trust his spirit will be. My heart reaches out to you and your family at this sad time. God Bless you all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Huethers and the entire Wall Drug family. My wife Jodi and I met at Wall Drug in the '90s, and nearly every time we've been back, Mike has spotted us, stopped what he was doing, and chatted with us and the kids just to catch up. He was warm and generous with his time, and we will miss him. May God speed his soul to heaven, and grant peace and consolation to his family.
~ Jim Thorp Albertville, SD (1/29/2014)
Marilyn & Family; I am a former employee of Wall Drug and Tyler Swift's sister. Mike will be greatly missed by those that knew him. He was a mentor to me back in the days of working at Wall Drug. He is one of the reasons I have good customer service skills as he taught me the right and wrong way. Even after I had quit working at Wall Drug when my husband I stopped to visit he was always there with a warm smile and no matter how busy he was took time to catch up with us. Know that all of you are in our thought and prayers in the days to come.

I know that Mike is with God in heaven. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Mike was a treasure.
   ~ Debbie Bryan Wall (1/29/2014)
The first time we met Mike was when we took our daughter to Wall to work there at the store during the summer. After a few minutes of talking with him we felt comfortable and assured that she could not be working under a better supervisor in a better place. Mike continued to prove that as fact. Each year we encouraged her to work there because of such good people as Mike. It was obvious that Mike cared for people. We were shocked and saddened when we heard the news. It seems as though it were yesterday that we met him. It still does not seem possible that such a great man has left us. How we wish there were more like him. His example continues to serve as an example to us on how to treat people. We are thankful for the impact he has had and continues to have in our lives.

Some have lived and died as though they never lived, but Mike is one lived and died as though he never died. His impacting legacy lives on.
