Dorothy Urban

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, April 10, 2014
at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 100

Dorothy A. Pletsch was born March 22, 1914, at Winner, South Dakota, the daughter of Frank and Ann H. (Holub) Pletsch. She grew up in the Winner area and graduated from Winner High School.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Glenn Urban on August 17, 1932, at Rapid City, South Dakota. They made their home on a farm-ranch four miles north of Philip which they operated until 1957 when they moved to Nemo, South Dakota. While in the Nemo area they ranched until moving back to Philip in 1971.

After her husband’s death in March 1983, Dorothy continued to reside in her home in Philip, where she cherished her family, faith and friends. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, while digging in the dirt. Dorothy also loved to quilt and crochet various items, including dish rags that she would give out to everyone at Christmas time. In May 2011, Dorothy moved to the Philip Nursing Home, where she has since resided.

Dorothy was a member of the United Church, UCW, the Bad River Senior Citizens Center, and the American Legion Auxiliary #173, all of Philip.

Grateful for having shared her life include her daughter Rita Ramsey of Philip; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Glenn in March 1983; her son Bob Urban; her son-in-law Cliff Ramsey; a granddaughter Lynda Urban; and a great-grandson Jesse Davis.

Dorothy's kindness and generosity lives on through all of you. What a lovely lady! I always admired her flowers (she even shared some with me from time to time).

Dorothy gave a gift of faith, courage, happiness and joy to those around her. Her family was very important and seeing the picture of her on her 100th birthday with the tinest of great great grandchildren beside her was another gift she bestowed on family. Now she's with her other family. "The best use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts life." William James

Dorothy was a wonderful lady and friend. She was a second Mom to me and was always there for a smile and a good hug. She will be missed but now she will rest in peace with Glen and the rest of the family in Heaven. God Bless her and the rest of the family. Bev and Cork

Dorothy, I know you were tired and ready to go home, but we miss you. Know that you are happy now, no pain, you never complained except when I woke you up to give you your eye drops, which by the way I don't blame you one bit. You were always a very special lady to me.

Rita and family know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers in the days to come. She WILL be missed by her family and friends. REST IN PEACE DOROTHY!!

Rita and family, we will forever remember little Dorothy! Both Debbie and I have had the privilege of fixing Dorothy's hair for many years now and she always brought the sunshine in with her when she walked over to the salon! I know she was a favorite of Debbie's clients too. I'm still snickering about the day that she didn't tell anyone where she was going, scaring Cliff.....he wasn't very happy with her, but it didn't faze Dorothy one bit!

Sorry I couldn't visit as much as I like but I always did enjoy when I was able to visit. I'll certainly miss the letters. It was always enjoyable when mom received one of your letters in the mail and certainly more so when I began to receive my own.
