Edward J. "Eddie" Hansen

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, December 13, 2001
at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City at the age of 81

Edward J. "Eddie" Hansen was born June 28, 1920 in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Claus and Monsina (Anderson) Hansen.

At an early age, Eddie moved to South Dakota to live with his aunt and uncle, Andrew and Ingeborg Hoidahl, on their farm northeast of Philip. Eddie grew up and received his education in Philip, graduating from Philip High School in 1938. After graduation he continued to help on the farm.

He was united in marriage to Marian I. Johnson on June 2, 1942 in Milesville, South Dakota.

They made their home on a farm northeast of Philip until June 19, 1944 when Eddie entered the United States Army. Eddie was active in the campaigns at Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Victory Medal. He was discharged on January 18, 1946.

He then moved back to Philip where he farmed with his aunt and uncle. In 1953 Eddie and his family moved into Philip, where Eddie worked for Tri-State Milling Company. In 1958 they moved to Quinn. Eddie continued to work for Tri-State Milling while in Quinn. Two years later they moved back to Philip. Later Eddie purchased his own grain truck that he operated until health reasons forced him to sell the truck. Eddie then went to work for the City of Philip Water Plant where he remained until his retirement in 1982.

After his retirement, Eddie and Marian enjoyed traveling together, bus tours, and playing cards. Eddie also stayed very busy with his woodworking projects.

Marian preceded him in death on March 12, 2000.

Eddie was a member of V.F.W. Post #3069 of Philip, Philip Masonic Lodge #153, NAJA Shrine Temple, Order of Easter Star, and the Bad River Senior Citizens.
