In addition to ranching, Johnny built dams for Marvin Brooks and worked for the Haakon County Highway Department.

In 1987, John and Elfrieda moved into Philip. While in Philip, Johnny worked at the Philip Livestock Auction as well as Harold’s Delivery.

In March 2003, Johnny and Elfrieda moved into the Senechal Apartments, where he remained until December 1, 2004, when he moved into the Philip Nursing Home.

Johnny was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Philip, a Haakon County Commissioner, and a member of the Howes Grazing Association from 1970-1982, where he served as treasurer for six years.
