Irwin "Howard" Youngof Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, January 1, 2004
|
Irwin Howard Young, better know as "Howard" to his family and friends, was born January 19, 1914, on his parent’s farm-ranch located on White Willow Creek southeast of Philip, the second of six children born to Milton and Iola Bertha (Peterson) Young.
He grew up on the farm-ranch attending Willow Creek grade school. He then attended Nowlin High School for two years before graduating from Philip High School in 1932.
Howard was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 19, 1942 and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1945 as a Tech-5. While in the Army, Howard was a radio operator and also a Thompson sub-machine gun expert. He served in the following battles and campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal and four overseas service bars.
After leaving the service he worked for his uncle, Ben Young, on his ranch at Ft. Pierre, South Dakota for several years before joining his brother Hollis, and his mother, who had purchased the original property as well as surrounding lands. Howard purchased the Guy Solberg property and farmground on Southcreek and land homesteaded by Uncle Charlie Young. Howard and Hollis farmed together and in 1954 won the Certificate of Achievement for soil conservation from the Committee on Agriculture, Greater South Dakota Association.
After his brother Hollis’s death in 1992, Howard continued to live on the farm-ranch until health reasons forced him into the Philip Nursing Home in October 1994, where he has since resided.
Howard served as Jackson County Assessor and was past-president of the Farmers Union.
Grateful for having shared his life are three sisters Ilene Handley of Rapid City, Inez Bingham of Escondido, California, and Iola Luckham of Escondido, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Hollis and Benjamin Harris Young.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Jim Cissell officiating.
