She grew up on the homestead and received the first six grades of education at the Coye Country School prior to attending Kadoka High School, where she graduated in 1924. She received her elementary teaching certificate from Nothern Normal in Aberdeen.
Myrtle taught in the Nowlin Rural School, 12 miles north of Kadoka.
She was united in marriage to David Estes on July 20, 1925, at Dupree. They made their home on a ranch southeast of Belvidere. Myrtle taught school in her home for several years, then taught junior high school in Belvidere for several years.
In 1973, they moved into Belvidere and her grandson, Chuck Willard, and his wife, Merry, took over the ranching operation.
After her husband's death in 1981, she continued to live in Belvidere for one year before moving into the Gateway Apartments in Kadoka, where she resided until moving into the Kadoka Care Center.
Myrtle loved the outdoors and loved to teach children. Her favorite thing was reciting poetry to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She could remember and recite poems until she died.
Myrtle was a member of the Belvidere Presbyterian Church.
