Catherine O'Connor

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Monday, March 27, 2000
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 92

Catherine Anna Murphy was born February 15, 1908, in Yankton County, near Irene, South Dakota, the daughter of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Noonan) Murphy.  She was the second in a family of five children.

In 1911, the family moved to Philip, South Dakota, to a farm-ranch known as the Ryan Place, located nine miles north of Philip.

She received her education in Stanley and Haakon counties.  She graduated from Philip High School in 1925 and then attended Madison State Normal for one year and received her first grade teaching certificate.  She taught school for nine years.

Catherine was united in marriage to F.J. O'Connor on April 27, 1935, at Lead, South Dakota.  To this union was born five children: Charles, Rita, William, Paula and Frances J.  They moved to the ranch north of Powell, South Dakota, which they operated for many years. 

In 1963, Catherine resumed her teaching career.  She recieved her bachelor's degree from Black Hills State in 1973.  During her teaching career, she was honored twice for being an outstanding teacher, once in Haakon County and once in Mellette County.

Her husband preceded her in death on April 1, 1982.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three sons and their wives, Charles J. and Shirley O'Connor, William G. and Sandra O'Connor, all of Philip, and Frances J. and Phyllis O'Connor of Cheyenne, Wyoming; her two daughters and their husbands, Rita and Frank Narcisian of Golden, Colorado, and Paula and Ron Ruff of Ft. Collins, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Frances J. O'Connor, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael O'Connor; her parents; one brother, Joseph Murphy; and three sisters, Genevieve Hart, Mary Murphy, and Teresa Woodruff.
