Richard DeYoung

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Saturday, November 8, 1997
at the Philip Nursing Home in Philip at the age of 90

Richard DeYoung was born December 3, 1906, in Deuel County near Bemis, South Dakota, the son of Jacob and Edith (Koenders) DeYoung.

As a child he moved with his parents to a homestead 20 miles north of Midland, in old Stanley County.  In 1918, the family moved to a farm three miles northwest of Midland.  He grew up there and received his education in the Midland area.

As a young man, he worked at the Jim Nelson Ranch before entering the U.S. Army during World War II.  He was involved in the construction of the Alaskan Highway while stationed at White Horse in the Yukon Territory, before being sent to Europe where he continued to work on supply roads for the troops.

Upon returing from the service, he again worked for the Nelson Ranch as well as for Jerome Nemec, at which time he purchased some land east of the Teeney Corner, which he farmed until his retirement in 1984.

In January of 1990 he moved to the Philip Nursing Home, where he resided until his death.

A highlight for Richard was when he received the annual 73rd Engineer letter, which was the group Richard was stationed with.  Something that brought Richard much enjoyment was when Father Kari playing the piano for the nursing home residents.  "Twinkle Toes", as Father Kari called him, would do his little jig to the enjoyment and clapping of everyone there.

Richard was a member of the Midland American Legion Post #143.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two sisters, Rena Menec of Midland and Margaret Crawford of Pratt, Kansas; seven nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Herbert DeYoung.

A memorial has been established.
