Millard Carr

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Thursday, December 14, 1995
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 80

Millard Carr was born November 24, 1915, at Philip, South Dakota, to Benjamin L. and Irene M. (Haagenson) Carr.  He grew up and received his education in the Philip area.  As a young man he worked in Louisville, Kentucky, for a couple years prior to returing to Philip.

He was united in marriage to Alice Knutson in Huron, South Dakota, in 1940.  They made their home in Pierre where they both worked as hotel clerks for two years prior to returing to Philip.

While in Philip, Millard worked as a service station manager, and as manager of the Farmers Union Oil Company.  He was parts manager at both Dorothy Brothers Auto Company and Philip Motor Company, prior to working for the City of Philip as the Water Plant Manager, a position he held until retiring.

Millard was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Philip where he served as church secretary for four years and was Sunday School Principal for two years as well as teaching Sunday School.  He served as the S.D. District Vice-President of the Lutheran Brotherhood organization for four years.

Millard was a charter member as well as being very active in the Philip Lions Club, where he served as club treasurer for many years, as well as having held various other offices.  He worked with the Boy Scouts for five years; served as president of the Philip High School P.T. A. for one term; and served on the City Council of Philip for two years.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Carr of Philip; one son, Marshall Carr and his wife, Tacy, of Wasilla, Alaska; two daughters, Judith Gittings and her husband, Leo, of Fredricksberg, Virginia, and Patricia Carr of Belle Fourche; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Mae Fitzgerald and her husband, Dr. William Fitzgerald, of Sherman Oaks, California, and Helen Medley and her husband, Joe, of Louisville, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Maurice, William and Harry Carr; and one sister, Inez Simmons.

A memorial is established.
