Ila Collene Loganof Philip, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, March 2, 1993
|
Ila Collene King, better known as "Collene" to her family and friends was born September 23, 1898, at Nettelton, Missouri, to Edwin and Delia (Green) King, the oldest of six children.
In 1904, when she was six years old, the family traveled by train to Platte, South Dakota. She attended country school for three years near Platte before finishing the 11th grade at Platte High School. After school she worked at the Wilson Hotel Restaurant in Platte.
Of course, in every young girl's life there is a romance and Collene met Wallace Gartner and they were married on January 16, 1917, at Lake Andes, South Dakota.
They purchased a cafe in Platte and operated it for two years before moving to the country where they operated a feedlot. The first three children were born there. Later they moved to a farm near White Lake, South Dakota, where the other three children were born.
In 1930 the family made another big adjustment, when they moved to the Philip area where she lived the rest of her life.
In 1941 we were at war! All five of the Gartner boys were in active duty overseas and Eveyln was in California working in a defense plant. When feeling they should do their share, Collene and Wallace packed up and moved to Bremerton, Washington, where they worked in the shipyards. All six children returned by war's end and Collene and Wallace returned to Philip.
Wallace preceded her in death on February 12, 1950.
Collene worked at the Midway Cafe for 12 years in Philip.
She married George D. Logan on June 12, 1962, and they made their home at the 11-Mile Corner, which they operated. Collene enjoyed the many rodeos and card playing that was held there.
George preceded her in death in July of 1981.
Collene lived for her family and friends. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Church Circle and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Grateful for having shared her life are her three sons, Clifford Gartner and his wife, Marie, of Kadoka, Cecil Gartner and his wife, Audrey, of Philip, and Herbert Gartner of Torrance, California; a daughter, Evelyn Henricksen and her husband, Arlo, of Watertown, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Denotter and her husband, Stan, of Nisland, South Dakota; a step-son, Philip Logan and his wife, Gay, of Philip; a step-daughter, Ramona Buchholz of Philip; 11 step-grandchildren; 23 step-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her first husband, Wallace, and her second husband, George, she was preceded in death by two sons, Francis and Harold Gartner; a grandson, Mark; a granddaughter, Brenda; a great-grandson, Clinton; a step-son, Dick Logan; and her parents.
