Olga L. Meyers

of Midland, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, February 19, 1992
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 79

Olga Louise Fosheim was born September 19, 1912, on her parents' homestead near the Deep Creek Lutheran Church, in the Moenville area north of Midland, South Dakota, to Thor and Gjertina (Gabrielson) Fosheim.

She grew up in that area and received her elementary education in the Haakon County rural schools prior to graduating from Pierre High School in 1932.  She then received her teaching certificate and later received her Bachelor of Science Degree, her Masters Degree in Education, and then in 1972 she received her endorsement to be elementary principal, all from Black Hills State at Spearfish, South Dakota.  She then began her teaching career in 1933 in Haakon County rural schools.

She was united in marriage to Walter Albert Meyers on May 17, 1937, at the Lutheran parsonage in Midland.  They made their home on a farm, near the Deep Creek Lutheran Church, which they operated.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1946.

The family continued to make their home on the farm and Olga then resumed her teaching career in the Haakon County rural schools.  In 1958 she moved into Midland where she taught in the Midland School System and continued as a classroom teacher, then elementary principal, and eventually the school librarian until her retirement in 1984.

After retirement, she worked part-time as Trinity Lutheran Church librarian and as the Midland Community Librarian until her death.

Olga was a member of the Deep Creek Lutheran Church, Midland PTA, the Educator for the Midland American Cancer Society, and was a member of the New Century Club, all of Midland.

In 1972 Olga was selected as Teacher of the Year, and was listed in Personalities in West and Mid-West.  In 1973-1974 she was listed in Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans and in 1984 the Midland Yearbook was dedicated to her.  Governor Bill Janklow proclaimed November 18, 1985, as Olga Meyers Day for the 45 years of being an educator.

Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Sonia (Mrs. Jerry) Nemec of Midland; her son and his wife, Phil and Bernie Meyers of Pierre, South Dakota; eight grandchildren: April, Charlene, Jim, Les and Christopher Nemec; and Darron, Dana and Damon Meyers; six great-grandchildren: Beth, Jacob and Joanna Nemec; Jalene and Chase Nemec; and James Meeker; four sisters, Emma Root, Thilda Mulcahy, Clara (Mrs. Roy) Roseth, and Ida Hunt, all of Midland; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Walter, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, George Fosheim in infancy, and Peter Fosheim; four sisters, Margit Fosheim, as a child, Anna Walker, Esther Schanzenbach, and Minnie Fosheim.
