Helen L. Schofield

Helen L. Stroppel was born June 22, 1919, on her parents' homestead located one mile south of Powell, South Dakota, to John J. and Violet (Miller) Stroppel.

She grew up there and received her elementary education in Powell, then attended Spearfish High School for one year prior to graduating from Philip High School in 1936.

Helen did domestic work in the Powell area.

She was united in marriage to Albert "Bud" Schofield on October 29, 1938, at Powell, South Dakota.

They made their home in Powell where they owned and operated the Powell Grocery Store for two years.  After her parents retired from their ranch, Bud and Helen moved on to the ranch and operated it and then later purchased the ranch.  They have continued to own and operate the ranch with the help of their sons.

Bud operated the Plum Creek mail service from Powell to Plum Creek and Helen was his assistant on many of those routes.

Helen was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Evening Guild of Philip, and was a member of the Powell Women's Club.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Albert "Bud" Schofield of Philip; four sons, Dave, Tom, Bob, and Dan Schofield, all of Philip; four daughters, Mary K. Hart of Billings, Montana, Ellen Schofield of Philip, Violet Schofield of Olathe, Kansas, and Vera O'Grady of Rapid City, South Dakota; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Stroppel of Midland, South Dakota, and Galo Stroppel of West Branch, Iowa; one sister, Mary (Mrs. Ted) Williams of Philip; a special friend of the family, Jan Mittelsladt of Olathe, Kansas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, John R. Stroppel.
