Robert James Welfl, better known as "Bob" to his family and friends, was born September 11, 1927, to William and Josephine (Hallinan) Welfl on his parents' farm located northwest of Philip, South Dakota.
He grew up and received his education in Haakon County rural schools. He farmed and ranched north of Philip until 1952.
Bob served in the United States Air Force, during the Korean War, from 1953 until his discharge in 1955. He then worked as an air traffic controller in California, Texas, Hawaii, and the state of Washington.
He retired in 1980 because of health reasons and lived in Seattle, Washington, until 1987 when he moved back to South Dakota. He later moved into the Rapid City Care Center.
