Lester E. "Bud" Ankrum

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Friday, October 16, 1987
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 58

Lester E. Ankrum, also known as "Bud" to his family and friends, was born November 9, 1928, at Chamberlain, South Dakota, to Lester J. and Minnie Lucille (Reynolds) Ankrum.

In 1928 the family moved to a ranch near New Underwood, South Dakota, and in 1930 they moved back to a ranch in Hyde County near Highmore, South Dakota.  He grew up and received his education in the Highmore area.

Les served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving from December 9, 1945, to October 3, 1947.  After his discharge he lived in the Kadoka area and worked as a heavy equipment operator building dams for various ranchers and farmers.

In 1949 he moved to Philip, South Dakota, where he trained under Ruben Thorvaldsen at Philip Motor Company as an auto body repairman.

He was united in marriage to Mary Hart on August 4, 1950, at Philip, South Dakota.

Les continued to work for Philip Motor Company for ten years as an auto body repairman and then became employed at Dorothy Brothers as an auto body repairman until the fire which burnt the garage in 1960.  He then worked as a superintendent while building the minute man missile silos in western South Dakota, for two years.  He then returned to Dorothy Brothers Body Shop where he worked until 1969 when he started his own body shop called Les' Body Shop.  He operated the shop until March 1, 1987, when he sold the business to his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Mike Noteboom.

Les was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Philip, was a member of the South Dakota Auto Body Repairman Association, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1813 of Pierre.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Mary Ankrum of Philip; two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Patti) Rhodes and Mrs. Mike (Tina) Noteboom, both of Philip; eight grandchildren; his father and step-mother, Lester J. and Nell Ankrum of Highmore, South Dakota; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" Ankrum of Beloit, Wisconsin,and Merle "Sweed" Ankrum of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister, Mrs. Bob (Clarice) Shepherd of Pierre; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Lucille Ankrum.
