Norma Alice Smith

of Philip, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, January 21, 1987
at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip at the age of 81

Norma Alice Hicks was born December 11, 1905, on a farm in Meade County near Dalzell, South Dakota, to Webster and Edith (Allen) Hicks.

She grew up and received her education in the Dalzell area.

Norma was united in marriage to John Roy Smith on February 22, 1923, at her parents' farm near Dalzell.  They farmed in the Grindstone area where John Roy Smith, her husband, homesteaded in 1907.  In 1935 they lived around Quinn Table, Quinn, South Dakota, until moving to a farm near Bull Flats in Custer County, South Dakota, in 1936.

In 1948 they moved into Custer.  Norma worked at the Mica Plant and the Ammunition Box Factory before working at the Custer State Hospital as a medication aide and supervisor until retiring in 1975.

Her husband, John Roy, preceded her in death on August 13, 1974.

Norma continued to make her home in Custer until illness forced her to moved to the Philip Nursing Home on December 20, 1986.

Norma attended the Custer Community Church, was past president of the Custer Senior Citizens, had held several offices in the Rebecca Lodge, was a member of the Royal Neighbors, and was a charter member of the Custer Community Hospital Auxiliary and the Custer V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared her life are her five sons: Alfred Smith of Philip, South Dakota, Richard Smith of Quinn, South Dakota, Wesley Dale Smith of Methuen, Massachusetts, Kenneth Smith of Custer, South Dakota, and Maxwell Smith of Santa Barbara, California; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) Eide of Philip,South Dakota; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Allen Hicks of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Harold Hicks of Tacoma, Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Harold (Marie) Slater of Tacoma, Washington, Mrs. Otis (Iris) Doughty of Everett, Washington, and Mrs. Matt (Martha) Gstohl of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, John Roy, Norma was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Montgomery; two sons, Everett and John Leo Smith; two great-grandchildren, Larry Morris and Audra Smith; two brothers, Earl and Elmer Hicks; and five sisters, Ruth Davenport, Esther Doughty, Vivian Platte, Virgie Short, and Rene Rose Hicks.
