Dwight David Hurst

of Murdo, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, December 9, 2015
at Avera St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre at the age of 70

Dwight David Hurst was born on June 24, 1945, to Orville “Rusty” and Verda (Howder) Hurst. Dwight grew up in the Draper, South Dakota area, attending rural country school through 4th grade, Draper Grade School, and graduating from Draper High School in 1963.

He later attended Black Hills State College. Following college he went to California where he worked for a short time. Upon returning to South Dakota he worked for Bert Creamer, Rankin Implement, Corky Hayes at Corky’s Auto Supply, and West Central Electric.

On April 3, 1971, Dwight was united in marriage to Sheila Masteller. To this union was born their son, Todd.

Dwight enjoyed gardening, mowing, fishing, and hunting. One of his best hunting memories was when he was able to shoot his prize elk, in 2003, in the Black Hills. Dwight also enjoyed driving the school bus and enjoyed those kids. He loved riding motorcycles throughout his life. Another joy of his life was having coffee at the “round table” with his many friends at the local restaurant.

Dwight was always willing and ready to help anyone out.

After 7 short weeks he succumbed to his battle with pancreatic cancer.

Survivors include his wife Sheila of Murdo; one son Todd Hurst of Mounds View, Minnesota; two brothers Russell Hurst (Janet) of Lakeville, Minnesota, and Norman Hurst (Mary Kay) of Mobridge; three sisters Joyce Drabek (Rich) of Belle Fourche, Nancy Densmore (Don) of Olympia, Washington, and Marlyce Miller (Dale) of Elk Grove, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dwight was preceded in death by a sister Jeanie Schroeder, his parents, and a special cousin, Dennis Hurst.

A memorial is established.

We are so sorry to hear about Dwight passing away. My Dad, Jeff (Melvin) Sanderson, thought he was a wonderful person, and he was right. One of the comments in the guestbook was that he was always ready to help. I agree as when my father passed away, it was Dwight that had Dad's old jeep pulled out to the Murdo cemetery for his funeral as Dad had requested.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
