Emma Fosheim was born on December 9, 1916, near Deep Creek, South Dakota, to Thor and Gjertina (Gabrielson) Fosheim. She grew up on her parent's homestead north of Midland. Later in life she was united in marriage to Samuel "Mike" Root on June 8, 1937, in Philip, South Dakota.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Root, of Oklahoma, and Lawrence Root of Mitchell; two daughters, Sylvia (LeRoy) Huber of Rapid City, and Betty (Darwin) Haerer of Wall; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Thilda Mulcahy of Midland, Clara (Roy) Roseth of Midland, and Ida Hunt of Midland; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, in December 1977; a son, Glenn who perished in the Rapid City Flood in 1972; a grandson, Marty, as a child; two brothers, George Fosheim in infancy, and Peter Fosheim; five sisters, Margit Fosheim as a child, Anna Walker, Esther Schanzenbach, Minnie Fosheim, and Olga Meyers.
