Roy Gravatt

of Wall, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, May 14, 1985
at the Rapid City Rehabilitation Center in Rapid City at the age of 91

Roy J. Gravatt was born April 29, 1894, in Iowa, to William and Sarah (Smice) Gravatt. As a young man he moved with his parents to Kimball, South Dakota, where he worked on several ranches near Kimball and the Big Bend area.

Roy was united in marriage to Olga Stensbol on January 26, 1920, in Gann Valley, South Dakota. After marriage they farmed and ranched south of Harold, South Dakota, until 1933. They then moved their household furniture and machinery by team and wagon and trailed their horses and cattle to the area north of New Underwood, where they lived for four years.

Later they moved to Vermillion, South Dakota, for one year and then back west river to the Piedmont area where they worked for the Cole Burton Ranch near Piedmont. The last few years they have lived near Elm Springs. They moved into Wasta in 1946 where Roy worked for the Chicago North Western Railroad and later for South Dakota Department of Highway and Birdsal Sand Company of Wasta.

He served as Wasta town marshall and also the Water Commissioner for 30 years before retiring in 1977. At that time they moved to the Prairie Village Apartments in Wall.

Survivors include his wife, Olga Gravatt, of Wall; two sons, Jack Gravatt, of Elm Springs, and John Gravatt, of Oakdale, California; two daughters, Helen Gabbert, of Dickenson, North Dakota, and Dora Mae Jensen, of Wall; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and four sisters.
