Mary Jane Hemmingson

of Kadoka, South Dakota, died on Monday, April 15, 2024
at the Kadoka Nursing Home at the age of 93

Mary Jane (Rittel) Hemmingson was born January 18, 1931 at Wanblee, SD to Sol and Ella (Brandt) Rittel. She attended schools at Wanblee and Kadoka.

On November 7, 1947, she married Andy Hemmingson at Pierre, SD. They lived on the family farm on South Creek until 1966 when they moved into Kadoka. Andy and Mary Jane joined the Kadoka Presbyterian Church together a few years after their marriage.

Mary Jane loved spending time with her family and spoiling the grandkids with special treats and hugs. She was a very good cook and made the best fudge and banana bread. She enjoyed spending time in her yard and working in her flower gardens. She collected antique dishes with her sisters, Betty and Darlene. Andy and Mary Jane loved going to auctions where they would purchase antique furniture and dishes. They worked together to refinish furniture. They also liked going to secondhand stores looking for antiques.

Survivors include one daughter, Paulette Wilmarth of Kadoka, one son, Ron (Nancy) Hemmingson of Eureka, SD; four grandchildren: Lori (Jeff) Konst, Cody Wilmarth, Eric Wilmarth and Justin Hemmingson; five great-grandchildren: Jade (Bailey) Konst, Kayla (Jake Hirsch)Wilmarth, Kylee (Caden Goetschius) Wilmarth, Jaslyn (Devin) Kampfe and Samantha (Dustin Eberle) Wilmarth; two great-great grandchildren: Harper Quinn and Huxton Lee; a sister, Darlene McCormick, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Andy; three brothers: Merle, Neil and Bob Rittel; two sisters: Marcelene Kukal and Betty Griswold; and a son-in-law, Rick Wilmarth.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the Kadoka Bible Church, with Pastor Jesse Taylor officiating.

Interment will be at the Kadoka Cemetery.
