Bob Judson

Pierre, SD

Marge, Gary, and family,

Coach Sims was my basketball coach from 1956 from 1960. I came out of Keystone with a lot of rough edges and went on to play basketball in college. This tells you how

Far he took me.

When I was a senior in high school we had a pretty good team. We lost two games, both to Rapid City. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a coach. If I couldn’t play in the state basketball tournament then I would try to coach in one.

Coach Sims was very organized, made us work and was fair to all. He was the only real

Good basketball coach I had before I got out of college and it was a natural to follow his lead. What a role model he was!

When I started coaching, I tried to follow a lot of the general ideas that I had learned from him. He was pretty demanding, we would work, have fun, but we always played defense with intensity. He knew where every player should be in that 1-2-2 zone no matter what the offense did. No other coach or player wanted to play against that Sims defense.

After having some success as a coach, I was asked to be a part of a few coaching clinics and almost always it would be to talk about defense. I took that opportunity to pass on many of the ideas and principles I had learned from Coach Sims.

It was my great pleasure to be part of a committee that selected him for the South Dakota Basketball Hall of Shrine in 1996, an honor long overdue, and to be there at the presentation at the State Basketball Tournament in Rapid City.

I will always remember that he was the person who had more influence on my life than any other teacher or coach.

Thanks, Coach.

Sincerely,

Bob Judson
