Almost two years ago, I had the chance to visit SD. I was kinda a last
minuet addition to the trip. On this trip, Grandpa and I went fishing.
It was a spur of the moment thing. I remember how excited he was. I
didn't have the fishing experiences that Spencer had with Grandpa, and I always
regreted that. I was so happy that I got to go fishin' with my Grandpa.
When we got to the river, Grandpa said it didn't look too promising, but we'd
fish anyways. He'd cast the line (a technique I have yet to master) and I
would wait. As soon as he'd get settled in the camper, I'd be reeling in a
big one. We caught about 15 or so fish, but only kept around 11. I
helped to clean them, but before that, he made sure I got a picture "with
my cats". Shortly after that trip to SD, I received some pictures in
the mail. Included in the bunch were the fishing pictures. I made
sure to put them in a frame and proudly display them. During the course of
this past school year, every now an!
d then, one of my kids would notice the picture in the cabin. They'd
always want to know where it was taken. I would say, "My grandpa took
me fishin'". They'd look at me and say, "Wow, I wish my grandpa
would take me fishing!". Thanks grandpa. That trip meant so
much to me. I love you and will always cherish the lessons you've taught
me and the many priceless memories you have left with me.
Your Grandson, David!!!

I will always remember the summers spent working and fishing with Grandpa.
It was during these influential years in my life that Grandpa taught me lessons
on how to be a man. Hard work, hard work, and more hard work. While working,
stories were told ranging from how the swordfish he caught cut off his middle
two fingers to how a little second hand smoke would never kill me after he
worked years underground inhaling toxic fumes from welding for hours on end. I
will always remember our fishing trips from the prairies to the River. I grew to
love Grandpa over the years. He was a great patriot for this great country, a
dedicated family man, enthusiastic fisherman who loved God's creations, and the
greatest Grandpa a young boy could ask for. They say parents can be judged on
their greatness by the type of people their grandchildren are. I hope to live my
life in a way to make my Grandpa proud. Thanks Grandpa for all the great
memories and lessons of life.

Uncle Doug was the kind of "uncle" we classify as a Favorite, he
will be missed on our visits to S.D. in the future and sorry we are so far away
at this time

Doug was an American Hero. As part of one of the greatest Battleship

I thought I'd said it all in the card to Mary & Kelly, but there is just
one more thought. "Uncle" Doug was one hell-of-a man's man.
