Edward H. "Eddie" Arthur, age 78, of Philip, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Edward H. "Eddie" Arthur was born February 17, 1928, at Ewing, Nebraska, the son of Edward and Theresa (Fraundorfer) Arthur. The family moved to Bad Nation in Mellette County, South Dakota and then moved to Tripp County in 1932, where Ed grew up on a farm. He attended South Greenwood rural school for eight years and high school at Witten. He worked for his brother in-law Robert Best, raising turkeys and farming for many years. During the blizzard of 1949, he moved to Presho and worked for Frank and Vera Butt.

Eddie was united in marriage to Alice Erikson on November 29, 1950, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho. After their marriage, he then went to work for the Frank Albus ranch north of Presho until he was drafted into the United States Army on February 14, 1951. He completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and then was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington, Ft. Hood, Texas, and Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He then went overseas to Yokahoma, Japan, Seoul and Puson Korea, and back to Hakido, Japan. Eddie was discharged on February 4, 1953 at Camp Carson, Colorado. After his honorable discharge, Eddie returned home and went to work for West Central Electric in Presho. On March 12, 1953, he was transferred to Reliance, South Dakota, and in July of 1955, he was transferred to Philip, where he has since resided. Eddie retired from West Central Electric on March 12, 1993, after forty years of service.

Eddie was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Wheeler-Brooks American Legion Post #173, the T.B.O. Club, the IBEW #1250 Union, the Philip Volunteer Fire Department, and a charter member of the Wednesday Night Prayer Group.

Grateful for having shared his life include two sons Curtis Arthur of Milesville and Holly Edwards of Black Hawk, and Greg Arthur and his wife Kathy of Philip; twodaughters Lana Elshere and her husband Jim of Milesville, and Teresa Mosher and her husband Mike of Martin; twelve grandchildren Misty and Ronnie Anderson, Cory and Stacy Elshere, Ryan and Chrissy Elshere, J.J. and Lindsay Elshere, Matt Arthur, Amber and Brad Beer, Murdock Arthur, Melanie and Kevin Tish, Levi and Jodi Mosher, Dustin Arthur, Kristopher Arthur and his fiance Leandra, and Andy Arthur and his fiance Kaye; twelve great-grandchildren Chase and Riley Anderson, Trey and Jenna Elshere, Carter and Camri Elshere, Talon and Thayne Elshere, Burke Beer, and Jade, Hallie, and Coby Mosher; two brothers Milfred Arthur and his wife Elaine of Lodi, California, and Eugene "Ooge" Arthur and his wife Kalyn of Rapid City; three sisters Mildred Zadell of Grand Junction, Colorado, Leona "Ony" Best and her husband Robert of Rapid City, and Alma Steinfeld of Sheridan, Wyoming; a sister in-law Doris Arthur of Winner; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eddie was preceded in death by his wife Alice R. "Allie" Arthur on November 8, 1999; a granddaughter Heather Marie Mosher; his parents; and three brothers John, Raymond, and Joe Arthur.

Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 4, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.

Interment with military honors by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard was held 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with Father Arnold Kari officiating.

A memorial is established.
