Mary Ann's Register Book Back to Obituaries
She grew up in Pine Ridge and graduated from Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge. Mary Ann was united in marriage to Vincent Salway. They made their home in Hawthorne, California, where she worked in the medical field. In 1973, she moved to Kadoka, South Dakota. While in Kadoka, Mary Ann worked as a LPN at the Kadoka Hospital. She was united in marriage to Harmon Elton Barber on July 1, 1974, in Pierre, South Dakota. They made their home in Kadoka where they operated the Wagon Wheel Motel. Elton preceded her in death in April 28, 1993. She continued to operate the motel until 1998, but managed the motel for Wendell Buxcel until 1999. She then moved into the Gateway Apartments in Kadoka where she has since resided. While at the Gateway, she enjoyed playing cards and met many close friends. The family is very grateful for the friends that gave her a normal life during the last seven weeks. Mary Ann was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka. She and Elton enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Grateful for having shared her life include five sons Joseph Salway and his wife Georgia of Garden Grove, California, Ronald Elton Barber and his wife Barb of Black Hawk, South Dakota, Michael Roy Barber and his wife Judy of Tampa, Florida, Gregory Allen Barber of Interior, and Dwight Douglas Barber and his wife Joann of Rapid City; four daughters Sharon Blackwell of South Gate, California, Patricia Ditel and her husband Greg of Lawndale, California, Maxine Boone and her husband Joe of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Roxannn Formanek and her husband Raymond of Philip; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a half-sister Lila Gardner of Casper, Wyoming; an aunt Lucille Brunsch of Norris, South Dakota, a son in-law Sam Guttilla of Chicago, Illinois; a sister in-law Sharon Bowman of Wanblee; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband Harmon Elton Barber, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Areleen Guttilla; a great-granddaughter Chessa Jankord; a step-mother Delores Peck; and a brother Loren Bowman. Mary Ann Barber, age 74, of Kadoka, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 surrounded by her family, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2004 at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, with a vigil service at 5:30 p.m. at the chapel. Rite of Christian Funeral was 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with Father Ron Garry officiating. Interment was in the Kadoka Cemetery.
