James "Jimmie" Dean

of Rapid City, South Dakota, died on Monday, May 27, 2013 at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City at the age of 86

James “Jimmie” Dean was born May 26, 1927, in Philip, South Dakota, the son of John “Jack” and Helen (Poste) Dean. He grew up on a farm-ranch in the Grindstone area northwest of Philip. He attended Dean Rural School in that area. He worked on his parents’ farm-ranch until moving into Philip in the late 1940’s. While in Philip he played the drums for a local band. In the mid 1970’s he moved to Rapid City where he worked and stayed at the Black Hills Workshop, where he has since resided.
Survivors include his brother Raymond Dean of Rapid City; his sister H. Lucile Peterson of Philip; a sister-in-law Florence Dean of Philip; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother Fay Dean.
Visitation was held one hour preceding the services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.
Interment was at the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.

As links to my growing up keep passing,very few are as deeply etched in my memory as watching my my mom and dad dance to The Philip Five at the old city auditorium(Ingrams Hardware) I hope you get to drum for some of my favorite musicans who have went before you-you are good enough to hold your own with any band. I always felt a connection with Jimmie. He always spoke to me and I always tried to take time to visit with him when he was in Philip. He lived a long life. I never heard him play the drums but I wish I had. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. ~ Boyd Waara Philip (5/27/2013)

Sorry for your loss. Jim spent many years living at my dads ( Andy Sorensen ), till his death. Jim was always a lot of fun to visit with and will be missed by many. I worked with Jim for several years at BH Workshop. I enjoyed visiting with him. He enjoyed talking about his home and family in Philip. I wish I could have heard him play the drums. Listened to Jimmy drum many many times, he played with Mom and Dad for years. He left his drums set up at the house a couple of times so I could give then a try. Our sympathies to all of Jimmie's family.

I so fondly remember playing in the Philip Five with Jimmie and the crew! Shirley or Marie would give about 4 beats and Jimmie took over from there.
